Toronto: A second-half goal from Ante Budimir proved decisive as Croatia secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in a FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L encounter, ending Panama’s hopes of advancing to the Round of 32.
Despite the narrow scoreline, Panama produced an impressive performance and tested Croatia throughout the contest. However, the European side capitalized on one of their key opportunities to claim all three points.
The match also marked a significant milestone for veteran midfielder Luka Modrić, who made another World Cup appearance nearly two decades after first featuring on football’s biggest stage in 2006. The 40-year-old continued to demonstrate his enduring quality and leadership in midfield.
Panama came close to taking the lead midway through the first half when Luis Rodríguez powered a header toward goal, only for Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livaković to produce an excellent save and push the ball away.
Croatia eventually found the breakthrough in the second half. A low cross from Josip Stanišić was met by substitute Ante Budimir, who finished clinically to score the only goal of the match and give Croatia a crucial lead.
Panama continued to press for an equalizer, but Croatia’s defense remained organized and resilient, preserving the clean sheet until the final whistle.

The defeat eliminated Panama from contention for a place in the knockout stage, while Croatia kept its qualification hopes alive heading into the final round of group matches.
After the game, Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić acknowledged the challenge posed by Panama.
“I would like to congratulate Panama for the fight they showed. To be honest, I did not expect such a difficult match. We were under pressure to secure three points, and that affected our rhythm at times. I am especially pleased that we could celebrate this victory on an important occasion for Luka Modrić, who once again delivered an outstanding performance,” Dalić said.
The victory gives Croatia renewed momentum as it looks to secure a place in the World Cup knockout rounds.
