Lucknow: Three-day workshops on vocal music and instrumental music at Bhatkhande Sanskriti University, Lucknow, concluded successfully on Friday. Organised by the Departments of Vocal Music and Instrumental Music from September 23 to 25, the workshops provided students with intensive theoretical, technical and practical training in Hindustani classical music.
Renowned vocalist Vidushi Anjali Malhar conducted the vocal workshop on the theme ‘Variants of Raag Bilawal’. She demonstrated aspects of alaap, swar expansion and performance through two compositions in Devgiri Bilawal. Students also received practical training in alaap and palta patterns in Alhaiya Bilawal and Yamani Bilawal, along with an understanding of the distinctions between different forms of Bilawal.
The instrumental workshop featured Delhi-based sarod player and music researcher Dr Chandrima Mazumdar. She trained students in sarod technique, raga-based performance, playing styles and presentation. She introduced Raag Shyam Kalyan and related ragas including Kamod and Shuddh Sarang, while providing practical exercises in alaap, taans, dugun and chaugun.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mandvi Singh thanked both experts for sharing their knowledge and experience with students. Registrar Atul Kumar described the workshops as an important learning opportunity for students.
The workshops were coordinated by Prof. Srishti Mathur, Head of the Departments of Vocal and Instrumental Music. Faculty members, researchers and students participated enthusiastically throughout the three-day programme.
