New Delhi: Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a vintage performance, scoring twice and rewriting the record books as Portugal cruised to a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage clash.
The emphatic win gave Portugal their first victory of the tournament after opening their campaign with a draw, taking their tally to four points from two matches and strengthening their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.
At 41 years and 138 days old, Ronaldo once again demonstrated why he remains one of football’s greatest players. The Portuguese captain opened the scoring in the sixth minute, converting a cross from João Cancelo from close range. The goal made him the first player in World Cup history to score in six consecutive editions of the tournament and the second-oldest player ever to score at a World Cup, behind Cameroon legend Roger Milla.
Portugal doubled their lead in the 17th minute through Nuno Mendes. Ronaldo cleverly stepped over a free-kick routine, allowing Mendes to strike and catch the Uzbekistan defence off guard.
The veteran forward added his second goal six minutes before halftime with a composed finish, giving Portugal a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break. The strike also saw Ronaldo surpass Portuguese legend Eusébio to become Portugal’s highest scorer in World Cup history with 10 tournament goals.
Uzbekistan’s hopes of a comeback faded further in the 60th minute when goalkeeper Nematov inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure, handing Portugal a fourth goal. Substitute Rafael Leão completed the rout three minutes from time with a powerful long-range effort to seal a dominant 5-0 victory.

Following the match, Cristiano Ronaldo said the result reflected the team’s hard work and growing confidence.
“Records are always special, but what matters most is helping Portugal achieve its objectives. The team showed character, belief and quality throughout the match,” Ronaldo said.
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez praised his side’s maturity and tactical discipline.
“Sometimes a difficult result early in a tournament helps a team grow. Against Uzbekistan, we showed greater composure, commitment and understanding. I am very pleased with the performance and the result,” Martínez said.
With Ronaldo once again leading from the front, Portugal sent a strong message to their rivals and reaffirmed their status as one of the contenders for World Cup glory.
