Haaland’s Double Powers Norway Past Senegal, Seals World Cup Knockout Spot

New Delhi: Star striker Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Senegal in a thrilling FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I clash on Tuesday, booking their place in the Round of 32 with a second consecutive win.

Norway took the lead just before halftime when Holmgren Pedersen capitalized on a defensive error by Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly to put his side ahead in the 43rd minute.

Three minutes into the second half, Haaland doubled Norway’s advantage after finishing a precise pass from captain Martin Ødegaard. Senegal responded quickly through Ismaïla Sarr, who pulled one back in the 53rd minute to keep his team in contention.

However, Haaland struck again five minutes later, restoring Norway’s two-goal cushion and taking his tally to four goals in the tournament’s opening two matches. Sarr scored his second goal deep into injury time, but Senegal could not find an equalizer as Norway held on for a crucial victory.

The win marked Norway’s fourth FIFA World Cup triumph over teams from four different confederations, underlining the team’s growing presence on football’s biggest stage.

After the match, Haaland said he was delighted to contribute with two goals and help his country advance. “Scoring twice is always special. I’m enjoying every moment of playing for Norway, and the World Cup is an incredible experience,” he said.

Despite the defeat, Sarr remained optimistic. “The loss is disappointing, but we still have one group match left and will give everything to win it,” the Senegal forward said.
