New Delhi: Algeria staged an impressive second-half comeback to defeat Jordan 2-1 in a FIFA World Cup 2026 Group J encounter on Tuesday, eliminating their opponents from the tournament and reviving their own campaign.
After suffering a 3-0 defeat against Argentina in their opening match, Algeria entered the contest under pressure and found themselves trailing at halftime. Jordan took the lead in the 36th minute when Nizar Al Rashdan found the net with a well-taken finish, giving his side a deserved advantage.
Despite the setback, Algeria remained composed and returned after the break with renewed determination. The North African side increased the tempo and pinned Jordan back with a series of attacks.
Their persistence paid off in the 69th minute when Nadir Benbouali scored the equalizer, bringing Algeria back into the game. With momentum firmly on their side, Algeria continued to push forward in search of a winner.
The decisive moment arrived eight minutes from full time when Amine Gouiri struck from close range following a set-piece situation, completing the turnaround and putting Algeria 2-1 ahead.

Jordan pressed for a late response but Algeria defended resolutely to secure all three points and record their first victory of the tournament.
Speaking after the match, Algeria midfielder Ibrahim Maza described the contest as a tough battle. He said Jordan had maintained pressure throughout the first half, but Algeria stayed patient and discussed the need to raise their intensity during the interval.
“We remained calm, worked harder in the second half and scored two important goals. This victory means a lot to us, and the three points will give us confidence heading into the next match,” Maza said.
The win keeps Algeria’s hopes alive in Group J, while Jordan’s defeat brings their World Cup campaign to an end.
