Lucknow: The Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana has emerged as an important welfare initiative in Uttar Pradesh, helping economically weaker families organise marriages for their daughters with dignity while reducing the financial burden associated with wedding ceremonies.
According to the state government, 5,71,963 couples have been married under the scheme during the current government’s tenure. The programme is designed to promote social harmony and equal respect for different communities by conducting marriages according to the customs and traditions of participating families. It also seeks to discourage unnecessary expenditure and extravagant displays associated with weddings.
Families from all communities with an annual income of up to Rs 3 lakh are eligible for the scheme. It also covers marriages involving widows, deserted women and divorcees.
During the financial year 2026-27, the government has so far received 72,787 applications and facilitated marriages for 17,758 couples. The annual target has been fixed at 72,448 collective marriages. Officials said applications are being scrutinised to ensure that assistance reaches only eligible beneficiaries.
Under the scheme, each couple receives financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh. Of this, Rs 64,000 is allocated towards establishing the household, Rs 21,000 towards wedding gift materials and Rs 15,000 towards essential arrangements for the ceremony.
The government is also strengthening transparency through technology. Applicant verification is being carried out through e-KYC, while income and caste certificates are digitally verified through the e-District portal. Preparations are also underway to introduce Aadhaar-based payments, enabling assistance to be transferred directly to the beneficiary’s linked bank account.
The scheme forms part of the state government’s broader focus on women’s dignity, safety, education, health and economic empowerment. Initiatives such as Mission Shakti and the expansion of women’s self-help groups are aimed at increasing awareness, security and participation of women in economic activities.
For economically vulnerable families, the scheme provides support at a time when marriage-related expenses can place considerable financial pressure on households. The government maintains that the initiative seeks to ensure that financial hardship does not prevent daughters from getting married with dignity and that welfare assistance reaches genuine beneficiaries through a transparent system
