Lucknow: The State Transformation Commission (STC) of the Uttar Pradesh government organised a workshop in Lucknow on developing urban roads in line with global standards, bringing together government officials, technical experts and national and international specialists to discuss the future of urban road infrastructure in the state.
The workshop, held at Hyatt Regency, focused on road safety, sustainable development and the need for an integrated urban transport system. STC Chief Executive Officer Manoj Kumar Singh, who was the chief guest, stressed the importance of building stronger and safer urban roads. He said India still has considerable ground to cover in developing road infrastructure that meets international standards and called for a long-term, integrated approach to urban development.
Former PWD Chief Engineer B.P. Singh presented an evidence-based assessment of the existing conditions in Uttar Pradesh’s cities. His presentation covered population growth and the expansion of peri-urban areas, drinking water and sewerage systems, drainage, solid waste management, urban transport and mobility, the financial position of urban local bodies, and comparisons with cities in other Indian states and around the world.
The workshop also featured international experiences from Spain and the United States in urban road development and management. Experts shared practices, technologies and approaches that could provide useful insights for improving urban road systems in Uttar Pradesh.
Several specialists, including Amit Khera, Ankit Gupta, Dr Agnivesh, Ashutosh Gautam, Nitya Ramesh, Dr Manoj Shukla and Shashank Shekhar, shared their views and professional experiences.
The workshop concluded with an open discussion on practical measures to improve road planning, design, construction, durability, safety and management in urban areas. The recommendations emerging from the discussions are aimed at making Uttar Pradesh’s urban road infrastructure safer, more sustainable, accessible and modern.
Senior STC officials, including Additional CEO Akshat Verma, Dr A.K. Gupta, Director, Land Asset Unlocking Cell, STC, and Dr A.K. Gautam, Director, Sustainable Development Cell, also attended the workshop.
