The meeting comes amid renewed speculation over the veteran opener’s place in India’s long-term 50-over plans and the team’s preparations for the next ODI World Cup.
The debate intensified during India’s recent tour of England, particularly ahead of the third and final ODI at Lord’s. Reports had suggested that the match could potentially be Rohit’s final appearance for India, prompting considerable speculation about his international future.
However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed those claims before the match, stating that there had been no discussion about the Lord’s ODI being Rohit’s farewell game. Rohit then responded in the most emphatic way possible—by producing a memorable century.
Lord’s century changed the conversation
Rohit scored 138 at Lord’s, producing one of the standout performances of the England series. His innings also made him the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at the historic London venue.
The performance came at a particularly significant moment. With questions surrounding his future dominating the build-up to the match, Rohit’s century served as a reminder of his ability to influence games at the highest level.
While the innings did not automatically settle the question of his long-term future, it certainly complicated any argument that his time in the ODI format should be considered over.
Rohit had already retired from Test cricket and T20 internationals, leaving ODIs as his remaining international format. That has naturally placed greater focus on his role in the 50-over side, particularly with the next World Cup cycle becoming an increasingly important consideration for the selectors.
Retirement speculation before the Lord’s ODI

Saikia subsequently played down the possibility of an immediate farewell, making it clear that Rohit remained part of the ODI setup.
