Power Employees in Uttar Pradesh Vow Intensified Protest Against Privatisation on Labour Day

Lucknow: On the occasion of International Workers’ Day, power sector employees across Uttar Pradesh announced a united and firm resolve to oppose the proposed privatisation of key electricity distribution companies in the state.

Responding to a call by the Vidyut Karmchari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti, engineers, officials, and power workers from across the state pledged to resist the proposed privatisation of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited and Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited, asserting that they are prepared for any level of struggle to protect public interest.

Concerns Over Consumer Impact and Worker Rights

The Sangharsh Samiti stated that privatisation of the power distribution sector—an essential public service—would adversely affect millions of consumers. It warned that such a move could lead to higher electricity tariffs, deterioration in service quality, and erosion of employee rights.

The committee emphasised that affordable and reliable electricity is a cornerstone of social equity and public welfare, and argued that handing over distribution networks to private entities could weaken this framework.

Labour Day Becomes Platform for Collective Resolve

Describing Labour Day as a symbol of workers’ unity and struggle, employees reiterated their commitment to oppose the policy at every level. They declared that if required, they would not hesitate to launch a decisive movement to safeguard the interests of consumers and workers alike.

Allegations Against Management

The committee also alleged continued harassment of employees by management, claiming that legitimate demands are being ignored and avenues for dialogue are being systematically weakened. It demanded an immediate end to such practices.

Warning of Statewide Agitation

Issuing a strong warning, the Sangharsh Samiti said that if the privatisation decision is not withdrawn and employee grievances remain unaddressed, power workers would be compelled to initiate a large-scale agitation.

The committee appealed to the state government to halt the privatisation process and engage in meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders, keeping in mind the interests of consumers, employees, and the broader public.

Reaffirming their commitment on Labour Day, power employees pledged unity, continued struggle, and dedication to maintaining a robust and people-centric electricity system in Uttar Pradesh.
