Lucknow: King George’s Medical University (KGMU) organised a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme at the Kalam Centre to mark World Physiotherapy Day, bringing together physiotherapists, medical professionals and students to discuss rehabilitation, sports injuries and the growing role of physiotherapy in healthcare.
Dr Yogesh Madhyan, senior physiotherapist at Apollo Hospital, spoke about rehabilitation protocols for patients recovering from shoulder surgery and explained approaches for restoring mobility and function. Dr Abhishek Chaudhary, a sports medicine specialist, discussed shoulder injuries commonly suffered during sports and outlined preventive measures and precautions.
The programme was inaugurated by KGMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Sonia Nityanand and Dean, Allied and Health Sciences, Prof K.K. Singh, who lit the ceremonial lamp. Dr Arvind Kumar explained the significance of World Physiotherapy Day, noting that the global professional body for physiotherapy was established in the United Kingdom in 1951. He highlighted physiotherapy services being provided across various KGMU departments and the degree and diploma courses conducted through the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR). He also stressed the need for an independent Department of Physiotherapy at KGMU.
Prof Sonia Nityanand congratulated physiotherapists and students and emphasised the importance of physiotherapy in hospitals as well as in maintaining health in contemporary life. Considering the extensive physiotherapy services required across departments, she assured participants of support for establishing a dedicated department.
Prof K.K. Singh also extended his greetings and called for expansion of physiotherapy facilities and provision of adequate resources.
Atul Mishra, president of the Provincial Physiotherapists Association, Uttar Pradesh, welcomed the guests and raised issues concerning physiotherapists. The chief guest assured that their concerns would be addressed on priority and said a formal meeting with the association would be convened soon. He also sought a proposal from the association regarding establishment of the proposed department.
During the programme, senior KGMU physiotherapist Dr Tejbir Singh was honoured with a memento and certificate of appreciation for completing 25 years of dedicated service.
Dr K.K. Chaudhary, secretary of the programme, proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Mansoor, Dr Ravindra Kumar, Dr Pranay Singh, Dr Shraddha, Dr Ritesh, Dr Anil, Dr Manvendra, Dr Shivam, Dr Faiz, Dr Lavkush, Dr Akanksha and several other physiotherapists and students attended the event.
