Kota Ravi Takes Charge as 22nd CMD of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited

Bengaluru: Kota Ravi has assumed office as the 22nd Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), marking a significant leadership transition at India’s premier aerospace and defence public sector undertaking. He succeeds D. K. Sunil, who retired on April 30 upon superannuation.

Bringing with him over three decades of experience spanning aerospace and defence (A&D), manufacturing, and electronics, Ravi’s appointment comes at a crucial juncture as HAL seeks to expand its global footprint and strengthen indigenous defence capabilities.

In his message upon taking charge, Ravi outlined an ambitious roadmap for the organisation. “My vision is to transform HAL into a globally competitive aerospace and defence enterprise, driven by innovation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), operational excellence, and people,” he said.

Prior to this elevation, Ravi served as Director (Operations), where he played a pivotal role in strategic planning and was instrumental in HAL attaining the coveted Maharatna status—an elite classification granted to high-performing public sector enterprises in India.

Over the years, Ravi has held several key leadership positions, including Executive Director and General Manager of the LCA Tejas Programme Division, and Executive Director (Corporate Planning). He is widely credited with steering major defence contracts, notably the supply of 180 LCA Tejas aircraft to the Indian Air Force and 156 LCH Prachand helicopters to both the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.

Ravi also played a central role in operationalising the LCA Tejas fleet within the IAF, while enhancing fleet serviceability through customer-centric initiatives. These included establishing seamless data communication systems with IAF bases and introducing a Single Point of Contact (SPOC) mechanism for efficient support services.

A strong advocate of indigenisation, Ravi significantly boosted domestic content in the LCA Tejas programme and expanded production capacity at HAL’s Nashik facility. He also fostered a robust manufacturing ecosystem by outsourcing key fuselage assemblies to private sector partners—an approach now yielding tangible results.

Under his leadership, HAL diversified into civil manufacturing and Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services, unlocking new revenue streams and strengthening its market presence beyond defence.

Academically, Ravi holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Malnad College of Engineering and is an alumnus of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and ISAE-SUPAERO (IAS, Toulouse, France). He also serves as a Nominee Director on the board of Multi-Role Transport Aircraft Limited.

With Ravi at the helm, HAL is expected to accelerate its strategic initiatives in defence production, innovation, and global collaboration, reinforcing India’s push towards self-reliance in aerospace and defence manufacturing.
