India among top 5 for essential technologies

New Delhi: India was in the top five for 45 of 64 essential technologies in 2023, up from 37 in 2022. According to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s Critical Technology Tracker, India ranks second in seven technologies. In 2023, India surpassed the US as the second research leader in biological manufacturing and distributed ledger technology. India ranks just behind the US and China in advanced data analytics, AI algorithm, hardware accelerator, machine learning, advanced integrated circuit design and fabrication, natural language processing, and adversarial AI in the fast-growing field of AI.

According to the research, India was in the top five for just four technologies between 2003–2007.

The tracker includes vital technologies in space, defense, energy, environment, AI, robotics, biotechnology, cybersecurity, advanced computing, advanced material, and quantum technology.

In particular, it tracks high-impact research, defined as the top 10% of the most-cited publications, from 2003 to 2023 as a measure of a country’s research performance, strategic objectives, and technological potential.

According to the study, China leads worldwide research in 57 of 64 essential technologies.

The US dominated 60 technologies between 2003 and 2007, but presently leads just seven (2019-2023 rankings), including quantum computing and vaccination and medical countermeasures.

The UK currently ranks in the top five in 37 technologies, down from 44 last year.

The EU leads in small satellite and gravitational force sensor and second in 30. Germany stays strong, ranking fifth in 27 technologies.
