Kolkata: Cyclone Remal and pre-monsoon have hit West Bengal. The impact of cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ has started becoming visible in West Bengal. There has been heavy rain in Kolkata overnight, due to which most of the areas were knee-deep in water on Monday morning. At many places, trees have been uprooted and electric poles have been uprooted, due to which power supply is disrupted. Whereas the traffic has completely stopped due to accumulation of water on the roads. Along with this, common life is in complete disarray.
Due to the overnight rain on Sunday, most of the areas of Kolkata including Barabazar, Dumdum, Phool Bagan, Khidirpur, Central Avenue, Kankurgachi have been filled with knee-deep water. Apart from this, Kakudgachhi and Dumdum underpasses are waist-deep in water, due to which vehicular movement has completely stopped. Schools have been closed due to rain and most of the shops in the market are locked. It is noteworthy that cyclonic storm Remal is rapidly moving towards West Bengal. In view of the threat of the storm, all flights from Kolkata Airport have been canceled for two days. Passengers are facing many problems due to cancellation of flights. Cyclone Remal will hit the Bengal coast tonight. Flights and trains have been canceled due to the storm.
In fact, according to the Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rains may continue in Kolkata and surrounding districts till Monday afternoon. Kolkata Municipal Corporation assured that the entire situation will be brought under control soon. Many roads were blocked due to falling trees in areas like Park Circus, Dhakuria, Ballygunge, Alipur etc. of Kolkata.
According to IMD, it is raining heavily in Sundarban. There is power failure in a part of Kultali block of South 24 Parganas since Monday morning. However, there is no news of any damage yet. Disaster response forces have reached the spot in Sagardweep.
