Landmark Foot Overbridge to Enhance Pedestrian Safety and Create an Iconic Urban Space
Lucknow: In a major urban infrastructure initiative, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has approved the construction of a modern skywalk near Lulu Mall on Shaheed Path. The proposed 100-metre-long and 5-metre-wide foot overbridge is expected to provide safe, convenient, and barrier-free pedestrian movement while also emerging as a distinctive urban landmark for the city.
The project was presented during a high-level meeting chaired by LDA Vice-Chairman Prathamesh Kumar, where the design and implementation plan received formal approval. The foot overbridge will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with an estimated investment of approximately ₹18 crore. The entire cost of construction will be borne by the private partner associated with the project.
Speaking about the initiative, Prathamesh Kumar said that the detailed plan for the modern pedestrian bridge has been finalized to address the growing need for safe crossing facilities along the busy Shaheed Path corridor. The structure will feature both staircases and elevators, ensuring accessibility for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, women, and other commuters.
He added that discussions have already been held with the Public Works Department, Traffic Police, electricity authorities, and Lulu Mall management to facilitate the commencement of construction work at the earliest.
Urban Space with Modern Amenities
Beyond serving as a pedestrian crossing, the project is being envisioned as a vibrant urban space. A landscaped green area covering approximately 1,200 square metres will be developed at the ground level. The area will include kiosks, interactive public spaces, public convenience facilities, and parking provisions.
In addition, commercial spaces will be created across the ground, mezzanine, and first floors of the structure. The rooftop is planned to feature an open-air restaurant and LED display screens, transforming the facility into a destination for recreation and social engagement.
Focus on Safety and Sustainability
The design places strong emphasis on safety and user convenience. Features proposed for the structure include anti-skid flooring, robust railings, CCTV surveillance, adequate lighting, clear directional signage, fire-resistant electrical fittings, and an earthquake-resistant structural design.
The project will also incorporate fire safety equipment, a public address system, first-aid facilities, and disaster management provisions to ensure a secure environment for visitors.
Phased Construction to Minimize Traffic Disruption
Authorities have assured that construction activities will be carried out in phases to minimize disruption to traffic on Shaheed Path. Temporary diversions, barricading, warning signage, and traffic marshals will be deployed wherever required.
LDA officials stated that continuous coordination with the Traffic Police and other concerned departments will be maintained throughout the construction period to ensure smooth traffic flow and public convenience.
Once completed, the skywalk is expected to significantly improve pedestrian safety in one of Lucknow’s busiest commercial corridors while adding a modern architectural landmark to the city’s urban landscape.
