ADR report throws up a surprising paradox

Lucknow: The report regarding the first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 in Uttar Pradesh is shocking. Of the 80 candidates contesting on 80 Lok Sabha seats in the first phase of the state, 28 have criminal cases registered against them. Of these, 29 percent candidates have serious criminal cases registered against them. This has been revealed by Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) after analyzing the affidavits of the candidates.

In the first phase, the seats of UP are Bijnor, Kairana, Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, Nagina, Pilibhit, Rampur and Saharanpur. The ADR report has come on the basis of affidavits submitted by the candidates for these seats.

Most criminal cases against BSP candidates

According to ADR report, BSP’s 8 to 5 (63%), SP’s 3 to 7 (43%), BJP’s 3 to 7 (43%), Jai Samta Party’s 2 to 2 (100%),  ( 1 in 1 (100%) candidates from Azad Samaj Party, 1 in 1 from RLD (100%), 1 in 1 from Congress (100%) have declared criminal cases against themselves. 50% of BSP, 29% of SP, 14% of BJP, 100% of Jai Samata Party, Azad Samaj Party, RLD and Congress candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

Most cases against Chandrashekhar

Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) candidate from Nagina, Chandrashekhar, has the maximum number of 36 criminal cases registered against him. At second place, Congress’s Saharanpur candidate Imran Masood has 8 criminal cases registered against him and at the third place, Minority Democratic Party’s candidate from Rampur, Arshad Warsi has 6 criminal cases registered against him.

Only 7 women candidates

The situation of women has also come to the fore in the beginning of Lok Sabha elections 2024. The number of women in the first phase of elections is very less. In the first phase, 7 (9%) women candidates are contesting the elections.

BSP’s Majid is the richest

According to the ADR report, out of 80 candidates contesting in the first phase, 34 i.e. 43% candidates are crorepatis.
7 out of 7 candidates from BJP (100%), 7 out of 8 from BSP (88%), 5 out of 7 from SP (71%), 1 out of 1 from Congress (100%) and 1 out of 1 from RLD (100%) Are millionaires.
The average assets of the candidates are Rs 6.95 crore. Among the main parties, the average assets of 8 candidates of BSP are Rs 13.19 crore, the average assets of 7 candidates of BJP are Rs 11.61 crore and the average asset of 7 candidates of SP is Rs 6.67 crore.
BSP candidate from Saharanpur Majid Ali is the richest in the first phase. His wealth is Rs 159 crore. Tasmeem Bano, independent candidate from Saharanpur, has assets worth Rs 78 crore. Jitin Prasad, BJP candidate from Pilibhit, has assets worth Rs 29 crore.

38% candidates have studied from 5th to 12th. Out of 80 candidates in the first phase, 30 i.e. 38% have declared their educational qualification between 5th and 12th. 41 (51%) candidates have declared their educational qualification as Graduation and above. A candidate has declared his educational qualification as Diploma Holder. Seven candidates have declared their educational qualification as literate and one candidate has declared their educational qualification as illiterate. Talking about the age of the candidates, the age of 23 out of 80 (28.75%) candidates is between 25 to 40 years. 47 (58.75%) candidates have declared their age to be between 41 to 60 years. 10 (12.50%) candidates have declared their age as 61 to 80 years.
