Ambuja Cements and LilaC Accelerate Commercial Development of Low-Carbon Cement

Ahmedabad: Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group and one of India’s leading cement and building materials companies, has announced a strategic partnership with LilaC Technologies Ltd., a UK-based clean technology company specializing in carbon capture and electrification solutions for high-emission industries such as cement and lime manufacturing.

The collaboration marks a significant milestone in Ambuja Cements’ broader decarbonization strategy and strengthens its commitment to achieving its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated net-zero emissions goal by 2050. Through increased electrification of cement manufacturing processes and the use of renewable energy, the company aims to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.

A commercial-scale demonstration project will be established at Ambuja Cements’ Sanghipuram plant in Kutch district, Gujarat, which has an annual production capacity of 6.6 million tonnes. The project will evaluate the integration of LilaC’s advanced carbon capture and hybrid electric heating technologies into cement production. The initiative is designed to maximize renewable electricity usage while capturing carbon dioxide emissions generated during the manufacturing process.

The technology also seeks to create a pathway toward eliminating coal consumption while maintaining flexibility in the use of alternative fuels. By improving the economics of carbon capture, the partnership is expected to make large-scale carbon capture and utilization more commercially viable for the cement industry.

If successful, the project could be expanded by seven to eight times its initial scale, becoming one of the world’s largest industrial carbon capture facilities. Such an expansion could capture more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, paving the way for scalable and practical low-carbon cement production both in India and globally.

Speaking on the collaboration, Karan Adani said, “Transitioning the cement industry toward a low-carbon future requires bold thinking, technological innovation, and collaboration across the value chain. Our partnership with LilaC reflects our commitment to evaluating next-generation technologies capable of reducing process emissions, improving energy efficiency, and supporting long-term sustainable growth.”

Daniel Rennie welcomed the partnership, stating that Ambuja Cements operates one of the world’s largest and most advanced cement manufacturing networks. He emphasized that the collaboration aims to develop a commercially viable, scalable, and future-ready solution for the global cement sector.

Ambuja Cements currently has a cement production capacity of 109 million tonnes per annum, supported by 24 integrated manufacturing plants and 22 grinding units across India. The company is accelerating its sustainability initiatives with investments in renewable energy and waste heat recovery systems. By FY2028, it plans to develop 1 GW of renewable energy capacity and 376 MW of waste heat recovery capacity.

The company has also achieved notable sustainability milestones, including 12 times water positivity and seven times plastic negativity. Recognized among India’s most trusted cement brands, Ambuja Cements continues to strengthen its position as a global leader in sustainable construction materials while advancing its vision of a net-zero future by 2050.
