New Delhi — India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path unfolded as one of the most impressive and multidimensional spectacles in recent history, seamlessly blending patriotism, cultural diversity, technological self-reliance, military modernization, and expanding global partnerships into a compelling national narrative.
This year’s celebrations carried added historical resonance as the nation marked 150 years of “Vande Mataram,” composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875. Revered as a rallying cry of India’s freedom struggle, the song’s legacy provided an emotional and ideological backbone to the parade, reminding citizens of the enduring spirit that shaped the Republic.
The ceremonial proceedings began with President Droupadi Murmu unfurling the national flag at Kartavya Path, followed by a 21-gun salute fired using indigenous artillery systems—a powerful symbol of Atmanirbhar Bharat and India’s growing confidence in its homegrown capabilities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tributes at the National War Memorial before joining the celebrations, later lauding the parade for reflecting the nation’s enthusiasm, unity, and pride.
A Historic Diplomatic Moment
For the first time, India hosted two top leaders of the European Union as chief guests—European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa. Their presence marked a milestone in India-EU relations, coming ahead of the 16th India-EU Summit on January 27 and renewed momentum toward a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement.
Calling her participation an “honour of a lifetime,” Ursula von der Leyen underlined the global significance of India’s rise, stating that “a successful India makes the world more stable, prosperous, and secure.” The moment underscored India’s growing strategic relevance amid shifting global dynamics and shared democratic values.
Military Might and Indigenous Innovation
A major highlight of the parade was its sweeping showcase of India’s defense modernization and joint operational strength. The tri-services tableau, “Operation Sindoor: Victory Through Jointness,” vividly illustrated the seamless integration of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, reflecting transformed warfare doctrines and coordinated national defense.
The unveiling of advanced indigenous technologies drew particular attention, notably DRDO’s Long-Range Anti-Ship Hypersonic Missile (LR-AShM). With speeds beginning at Mach 10, an approximate range of 1,500 kilometers, and a quasi-ballistic trajectory designed to evade radar detection, the system places India among an elite group of nations with hypersonic capabilities tailored for maritime defense.
Mechanized columns rolled past with T-90 Bhishma tanks, Arjun Main Battle Tanks, BMP-II Infantry Combat Vehicles, Nag missile systems, and high-mobility reconnaissance platforms. A first-ever phased ‘Battle Array Format’ demonstration, supported by Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters and Rudra armed helicopters, offered a glimpse into future battlefield readiness.
Adding texture and symbolism were Special Forces contingents, robotic mules for logistics, indigenous dog breeds, birds of prey used for detection, Bactrian camels, Zaniskari ponies, and elite marching units—each reflecting innovation rooted in tradition.
The Indian Air Force flypast was a visual crescendo, led by the Vajraang formation of six Rafale fighter jets executing precise maneuvers. The finale saw Mi-17 helicopters showering flower petals and thousands of tricolor balloons released into the winter sky.
Culture, Diversity, and People’s Power
Cultural expression remained at the heart of the celebrations. Thirty tableaux rolled down Kartavya Path—17 from States and Union Territories and 13 from Ministries and Services—depicting regional heritage, freedom movement contributions, folk arts, and development journeys. Notable displays included Jammu & Kashmir’s cultural artefacts, West Bengal’s tribute to Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, and Assam’s terracotta craftsmanship.
Nearly 2,500 artistes from across India performed music, dance, and folk sequences along the route, embodying the country’s timeless ethos of unity in diversity. Thrilling elements such as women-led paramilitary motorcycle contingents and the joint ‘Dare Devils’ stunts by CRPF and SSB teams electrified the audience.

Beyond pageantry, the 77th Republic Day stood as a reflection of India’s journey—deeply rooted in heritage, empowered by indigenous innovation, and outward-looking through global partnerships.
