Record surge in pilgrims, rise in handicrafts income, and expansion of hospitality sector mark Ayodhya’s new economic chapter
Lucknow: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Ayodhya’s economy is witnessing an unprecedented revival powered by temple tourism and infrastructure growth. As the holy city gears up for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flag-hoisting ceremony atop the Shikhar of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple on November 25, preparations are in full swing under the supervision of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.

The grand construction of the Ram Temple has not only transformed Ayodhya’s spiritual landscape but has also triggered a powerful economic resurgence. The city, now radiating new energy and grandeur, has become a magnet for millions of domestic and foreign tourists, helping propel Uttar Pradesh’s economy to new heights. Foreign visitors are also contributing by giving Ayodhya’s local products a global identity.
Economic Boom Through Temple Tourism
Since the annual Deepotsav celebrations began under CM Yogi’s direction, Ayodhya has broken record after record, drawing lakhs of devotees each year. With the upcoming flag-hoisting event, the city expects another surge in visitors, translating into direct gains for local traders, artisans, and small entrepreneurs.
Hotels, lodges, and guest houses are witnessing near-full bookings, while restaurants and the hospitality sector are experiencing significant revenue growth. Tourists are purchasing large quantities of handicrafts, sculptures, textiles, and souvenirs, boosting sales for local artisans and small business owners.
Transportation services — including e-rickshaws, taxis, tourist buses, and car rentals — also see a sharp rise in income during major religious events, creating new employment opportunities for hundreds in the travel and logistics sector.
Ayodhya’s Growing Contribution to UP’s Economy
Post the consecration of the Ram Temple, Ayodhya has set new economic benchmarks. In 2024, around 16.44 crore pilgrims visited the temple — a historic record. Between January and June 2025, that number surged to over 23.82 crore visitors, reflecting a 40–50% rise in tourist inflow.

Officials credit this growth to CM Yogi’s persistent focus on cultural tourism and local empowerment. Ayodhya’s transformation is not merely symbolic of spiritual resurgence but also of inclusive development and prosperity.
Handicrafts and Small Industries Thrive
The economic revival has greatly benefited local artisans. The number of handicraft workers in Ayodhya has increased by over 25%, with their daily income jumping from ₹200–300 to ₹1,000–1,500. On festive occasions like Deepotsav, earnings multiply several times. Potters, florists, boatmen, and other low-income groups also see a significant boost in income during the festive season.
During the last Deepotsav, 90% of hotels were fully booked, and local businesses — from restaurants to souvenir shops — earned over ₹5 crore collectively.
Temple Tourism Industry on the Rise
The temple tourism sector has emerged as one of the strongest economic drivers in Uttar Pradesh. It is estimated that religious tourism and related industries now contribute around ₹1.25 lakh crore annually to the state’s economy. The number of tourists visiting Ayodhya rose from 5.76 crore in 2023 to 16.44 crore in 2024, demonstrating Ayodhya’s growing prominence as a global pilgrimage destination.
ODOP Boosting Ayodhya’s Global Reach
Under the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme, Ayodhya’s traditional handicrafts and agro-based products have reached international markets. The district, known for its jaggery (gur) production, has nearly 20% of its cultivable land under sugarcane farming. Tourists often buy local specialties such as gajak, laddoos, and jaggery-based sweets, benefitting both sugarcane farmers and local entrepreneurs.
A Model for Spiritual and Economic Harmony
Ayodhya today stands as a model of spiritual prosperity blended with economic growth. The revival of temple tourism has not only strengthened Uttar Pradesh’s economy but also enhanced India’s cultural footprint on the global map. With CM Yogi Adityanath’s vision and PM Modi’s guidance, the city of Lord Ram continues to illuminate the path toward development, devotion, and dignity.
