UP Council Approves ₹17.58-Lakh 5G Antenna Research Project at MJPRU

Bareilly: Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University (MJPRU), Bareilly, has achieved a significant milestone in research and innovation with the Uttar Pradesh Council of Science and Technology approving a three-year research project focused on developing an advanced metasurface-based multibeam antenna for 5G applications.

The project, titled “Design and Development of Metasurface Based Multibeam Antenna for 5G Applications,” has been proposed by Associate Professor Dr Deepak Gangwar of the Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Professor M.L. Gangwar of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Dr Inderpreet Kaur of Electronics Engineering.

Dr Deepak Gangwar is the Principal Investigator of the project, while Professor M.L. Gangwar and Dr Inderpreet Kaur will serve as Co-Investigators.

The project aims to develop indigenous antenna technology capable of transmitting and receiving signals efficiently in multiple directions simultaneously. Such a technology could help improve the capacity, coverage, spectrum efficiency and data transmission performance of 5G communication networks.

Over the three-year project period, the research team will work on the design, simulation, fabrication and testing of a high-performance multibeam antenna using advanced metasurface technology, phase-gradient structures and modern microwave engineering principles. The project has been sanctioned a research grant of approximately ₹17.58 lakh.

Explaining the significance of the project, Dr Deepak Gangwar said next-generation 5G and 6G communication systems would require advanced antenna technologies capable of supporting high data rates, low latency and improved network coverage.

The proposed metasurface-based multibeam antenna is expected to address several of these challenges while contributing to the development of indigenous telecommunications technology in India.

The research could have applications across several emerging sectors, including wireless communication, smart cities, the Internet of Things (IoT), defence communication, satellite communication and next-generation mobile networks.

Apart from technological development, the project is also expected to create research opportunities for scholars and undergraduate and postgraduate students of the university. Students will get opportunities to participate in advanced research, antenna simulation, prototype development and testing, thereby gaining practical exposure to emerging communication technologies.

University authorities welcomed the approval of the project and congratulated Dr Deepak Gangwar, Professor M.L. Gangwar and Dr Inderpreet Kaur for the achievement. They described the project as a reflection of the university’s growing research capabilities, scientific excellence and emphasis on innovation.

The university expressed confidence that successful completion of the project would further strengthen MJPRU’s scientific profile at the national level and contribute to the development of indigenous technologies aligned with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

With the rapid evolution of wireless communication and the transition towards future 6G networks, the research initiative is expected to provide a platform for developing locally designed antenna solutions while strengthening the university’s contribution to cutting-edge telecommunications research.
