University of Lucknow Celebrates World Forest Day with Expert Lecture and Plantation Drive

Lucknow: The Department of Botany, University of Lucknow, in collaboration with the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) Lucknow chapter, organized an enlightening lecture and plantation drive to mark World Forest Day. The event aimed to highlight the alarming issue of depleting forest diversity in India and the urgent need for conservation.

The keynote lecture on the topic “Depleting Forest Diversity in India” was delivered by Dr. Uma Shanker Singh, Former Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Uttar Pradesh. In his address, Dr. Singh emphasized the critical role of forests in maintaining ecological balance and the various threats leading to biodiversity loss. He discussed deforestation, climate change, and human encroachment as major challenges and urged collective efforts for afforestation and conservation.

Following the insightful lecture, a plantation drive was conducted, graced by the presence of  Vice Chancellor of the University of Lucknow. The Vice Chancellor, along with faculty members and students, actively participated in tree plantation on the university campus, symbolizing a commitment to environmental sustainability.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Gauri Saxena, Head of Department of Botany remarked, “World Forest Day is a reminder of our responsibility towards nature. Through such initiatives, we hope to inspire young minds to become stewards of the environment.”

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, researchers, and faculty members, who pledged to contribute towards afforestation and environmental protection. The celebration of World Forest Day at the University of Lucknow served as a reminder of our responsibility to preserve nature for future generations.
