Precision, Prevention and Pulmonary Care: Dr A.K. Pandey’s Vision for the Future

Lucknow: Dr A.K. Pandey, MBBS, MD, DM in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, is an experienced pulmonologist and critical care specialist at Medinity Hospital with a strong academic background and more than a decade of diverse clinical experience. Born and brought up in Varanasi, he completed his schooling in the holy city of Kashi before pursuing his medical education at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, where he completed his MBBS in 2005.

His interest in respiratory medicine developed further during his postgraduate training at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, where he pursued respiratory medicine and critical care from 2013 to 2016. He subsequently spent two years at Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, gaining extensive exposure to pulmonary and critical care with a super-speciality approach.

Dr Pandey also pursued advanced training at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and completed a fellowship in advanced bronchoscopic interventions. His professional qualifications include MRCP (London), European Diploma in Adult Respiratory Medicine from Switzerland, SCE and FABIP, along with specialised training in sleep-related breathing disorders and critical care.

Specialised Expertise

His clinical expertise covers tuberculosis, asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, pneumonia, pleural disorders, bronchiectasis and sleep-related breathing disorders. He also specialises in lung cancer diagnosis and advanced pulmonary interventions, including linear and radial EBUS, rigid and flexible bronchoscopy, semi-flexible thoracoscopy and complex bronchoscopic procedures.

During his career in Lucknow, Dr Pandey has been among the early practitioners to undertake advanced bronchoscopic interventions, including tumour debulking, complex foreign-body extraction and procedures involving critically ill patients. His approach combines advanced technology with careful clinical assessment and the individual needs of each patient.

Building a Strong Critical Care and Pulmonary Programme

Looking ahead, Dr Pandey aims to help develop a professionally structured and robust critical care department at Medinity Hospital, with pulmonary medicine and interventional pulmonology as key areas of focus. He believes that the initial priority should be to establish a strong critical care backbone, gradually expanding capacity as patient needs and hospital operations grow.

He also sees considerable potential in developing a multidisciplinary team involving cardiology, rheumatology, endocrinology and neurology. An integrated cardiopulmonary and critical care model, he believes, can improve coordination and provide patients with comprehensive care under one roof.

Another important area for him is building referral networks and increasing awareness about respiratory diseases. With COPD and asthma remaining significant concerns, he believes greater emphasis should be placed on early diagnosis, counselling, appropriate treatment and long-term disease management.

Keeping Patient Care Affordable and Rational

For Dr Pandey, affordability is closely linked to responsible medical practice. He believes treatment should remain as simple as possible, with expensive medicines and invasive procedures used only when genuinely necessary. He advocates avoiding unnecessary dependence on antibiotics and steroids and emphasises identifying the underlying cause of illness before deciding on treatment.

Patient care, in his view, should also take into account a person’s economic circumstances. The objective is not simply to prescribe more, but to prescribe appropriately while ensuring that patients are not exposed to unnecessary risks.

Education and the Next Generation

Alongside clinical practice, Dr Pandey takes an active interest in training young medical professionals, including those pursuing DNB programmes. He believes continuous learning, exposure to newer technologies and mentorship are essential for strengthening the future of pulmonary and critical care medicine.

He is also a member of several professional organisations, including the Indian Chest Society, European Respiratory Society, American Thoracic Society and Academy of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

A Practical Message for Patients

Dr Pandey strongly advises patients against self-medication. A persistent cough, recurrent or prolonged mild infection, poor appetite, unexplained weight loss or other continuing respiratory symptoms should not be ignored. Such symptoms warrant evaluation by a qualified pulmonologist rather than treatment based on hearsay or over-the-counter medication.

His philosophy is straightforward: early consultation, accurate diagnosis, rational treatment and patient counselling can make respiratory care safer, more effective and more affordable.

With his combination of academic training, international qualifications, interventional expertise and patient-centred approach, Dr A.K. Pandey hopes to contribute to building a comprehensive pulmonary and critical care ecosystem that keeps pace with the changing needs of patients and advances in modern medicine.
