San Francisco: Switzerland were left stunned after a stoppage-time own goal by Miro Muhim gifted Qatar a dramatic 1-1 draw in their Group B FIFA World Cup encounter at San Francisco, despite dominating large phases of the match.
Breel Embolo had given Switzerland the lead in the 17th minute, converting a penalty after Remo Freuler was brought down inside the box. The early strike put the European side in control, and they appeared set to secure all three points for most of the contest.
Switzerland, featuring experienced players such as Granit Xhaka and Ricardo Rodríguez, maintained pressure throughout the first half and created multiple chances. Noah Okafor and Dan Ndoye repeatedly troubled the Qatari defence, while goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was rarely tested but remained alert when called upon.
Qatar, making their first World Cup appearance on foreign soil, struggled early but gradually found rhythm through counterattacks. Edmilson Junior came close in the opening minutes, forcing an important save from Kobel.
Despite Switzerland’s dominance and a high number of attempts on goal, they failed to extend their lead, with Qatar goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham producing a string of crucial saves to keep his side in the game.
The turning point came deep into stoppage time when Qatar applied sustained pressure inside the Swiss penalty area. Following a dangerous cross delivered by Homam Ahmed, Swiss defender Miro Muhim inadvertently headed the ball past his own goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel, handing Qatar a dramatic equaliser.

The late equaliser stunned the Swiss players, who had been moments away from securing victory.
Switzerland coach Murat Yakin admitted his side should have managed the game better. “We created many chances but lacked efficiency in finishing. We need more composure in key moments,” he said, adding that his team’s performance overall was encouraging despite the result.
Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui, meanwhile, praised his team’s resilience. “It is a historic moment for us. To earn a point against a strong European side like Switzerland is very important. We stayed disciplined and were rewarded in the end,” he said.
Both teams now share a point each in Group B, with Switzerland left to reflect on missed opportunities and Qatar celebrating a hard-earned draw secured in dramatic fashion.
