Piaggio Vehicles Launches Ape Wave Electric E-Rickshaw for Affordable Urban Mobility

New Delhi: Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd., the Indian subsidiary of the Piaggio Group, has expanded its electric passenger vehicle portfolio with the launch of the all-new Ape Wave, an affordable L3-category electric passenger three-wheeler designed to meet the growing demand for sustainable last-mile mobility in India.

Developed for urban and semi-urban transport, the Ape Wave combines low acquisition and operating costs with enhanced passenger comfort, safety and reliable performance. The company says the new model is aimed at drivers and fleet operators looking to transition from conventional vehicles to electric mobility without compromising on quality or earning potential.

Built on Piaggio’s extensive experience in the electric three-wheeler segment, the Ape Wave has been engineered for shared mobility services, fixed-route operations and short-distance commuting. The vehicle offers premium ride characteristics typically associated with higher-segment models while remaining accessible to cost-conscious buyers.

Commenting on the launch, Diego Graffi, Chairman and Managing Director, Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd., said the Indian electric mobility market is witnessing rapid growth, particularly in the passenger three-wheeler segment.

“Customers are increasingly looking for dependable and affordable electric mobility solutions. The Ape Wave has been developed specifically for Indian operating conditions, offering an ideal balance of comfort, safety, performance and affordability. We believe it will not only support the country’s transition to cleaner transportation but also create new livelihood opportunities for drivers and fleet owners,” he said.

Amit Sagar, Executive Vice President – Domestic Business and Retail Finance, said demand for electric passenger vehicles continues to rise, particularly in cities where shared and short-distance transport plays a vital role.

“The Ape Wave delivers an attractive combination of low operating costs, dependable performance and passenger comfort. Its durable construction, reduced maintenance requirements and practical design make it a compelling choice for both individual operators and fleet customers,” he added.

Designed for Everyday Mobility

The Ape Wave is equipped with a 5.4 kWh battery pack paired with a 3 kW electric motor producing 25 Nm of torque. It has a top speed of 40 km/h and can negotiate gradients of up to 19%, making it suitable for varied urban road conditions.

On a full charge, the vehicle offers a real-world driving range of around 110 km, while certified testing standards rate its range at up to 140 km. The battery can be fully charged in approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes, enabling quick turnaround for daily commercial operations.

The e-rickshaw features an integrated chassis, all-metal body construction, 180 mm ground clearance, a specially tuned suspension system and reduced noise and vibration levels to enhance ride quality. Spacious seating further improves passenger comfort, while the robust build is designed to withstand demanding operating conditions on Indian roads.

Strengthening Piaggio’s EV Portfolio

The Ape Wave builds on Piaggio’s expanding electric mobility lineup, which already includes the Ape E-City Swappable, Ape E-City FX, Ape E-City Max and Ape E-City Ultra. With the latest addition, the company aims to strengthen its presence in India’s fast-growing electric three-wheeler market while offering practical, environmentally friendly transportation solutions.

The Ape Wave will be available through Piaggio’s authorised dealership network across the country. It has been introduced at an introductory ex-showroom price of ₹2.55 lakh (Pune), positioning it as an affordable and efficient option for commercial passenger transport.
