Mumbai: India’s economic transformation is giving rise to a rapidly expanding mass-affluent segment, reshaping consumer expectations and prompting banks to rethink how they deliver premium financial services. Positioned between traditional retail customers and high-net-worth individuals, this emerging demographic is increasingly driving demand for personalised banking, integrated lifestyle benefits and long-term wealth solutions.
Higher incomes, entrepreneurial growth and greater exposure to global lifestyles through digital platforms have fuelled the rise of this segment. Unlike inherited wealth, many mass-affluent consumers are first-generation wealth creators who prioritise value, convenience and tailored financial experiences.
According to Hitendra Jha, Head of Retail Liabilities, TASC and TPP at Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, the defining characteristic of this customer group extends beyond income.
“The mass-affluent segment is shaped by a mindset rather than wealth alone. These customers are building their own financial futures, making them discerning, selective and increasingly focused on personalised financial solutions. Banking for them is no longer limited to transactions or savings—it is about seamlessly supporting their broader lifestyle, from travel and wellness to entertainment and long-term financial planning,” he said.
The shift is also reflected in India’s changing investment landscape. The Economic Survey 2025–26 notes that the share of equities and mutual funds in household financial savings has increased significantly—from around 2% in FY12 to more than 15.2% in FY25. This indicates a growing preference for wealth creation through investments, with customers seeking sophisticated financial products alongside everyday banking services.
Banking Beyond Transactions
As customer expectations evolve, banks are moving beyond conventional products to offer integrated banking ecosystems that combine financial services with lifestyle privileges.
Modern premium banking programmes increasingly include dedicated relationship managers, enhanced transaction capabilities, travel and dining privileges, wellness benefits, curated reward programmes and digital-first services designed to simplify everyday financial management.
Rather than focusing solely on preferential interest rates or faster service, financial institutions are positioning premium banking as a holistic experience that blends convenience with personalised engagement.

A New Generation of Premium Banking
Banks are responding by introducing specialised offerings tailored to the mass-affluent segment. One such example is Ivory by Ujjivan, a premium banking programme designed to combine financial solutions with lifestyle-focused benefits.
The programme offers dedicated relationship management, a premium metal debit card with international accessibility, accelerated rewards, curated hospitality partnerships and personalised banking support. The objective is to integrate banking into customers’ daily lives through services that extend beyond traditional financial products.
The emphasis is on creating a seamless experience where banking complements customers’ professional ambitions, travel plans, lifestyle choices and wealth-building goals.
India is now among the world’s fastest-growing wealth markets, and the continued expansion of the mass-affluent population is expected to reshape the country’s financial services landscape.
As aspirations evolve, premium banking is likely to be defined less by exclusivity alone and more by its ability to deliver intuitive, relationship-driven experiences. Industry observers believe banks that successfully combine digital innovation, personalised advisory services and meaningful lifestyle benefits will be best positioned to meet the expectations of this increasingly influential customer segment.
With financial priorities shifting from basic banking to holistic wealth management and everyday convenience, the future of premium banking will be driven by institutions that build enduring customer relationships rather than simply offering financial products.
