New Delhi: Former Indian Army Chief Manoj Mukund Naravane has asserted that the armed forces operated with complete support from the government during the 2020 military standoff with China, dismissing claims that the Army was left without clear direction at a critical juncture.
In a recent interview, General Naravane addressed the political controversy triggered by remarks attributed to his yet-to-be-published memoir Four Stars of Destiny. The debate intensified after Rahul Gandhi suggested that the military leadership had been “left alone” during the tense face-off at eastern Ladakh, particularly around the Rechin La sector.
Refuting the claim, the former Army chief said the Prime Minister’s guidance at the time—asking him to “do what you think is right”—should not be misconstrued as a lack of direction. Instead, he described it as a “gesture of trust” that granted operational freedom to military commanders who were best placed to assess ground realities.
“Trust, Not Isolation”
General Naravane clarified that while leadership roles can often feel isolating, it does not imply abandonment. “I never felt alone. The Army, the government, and the country stood firmly behind the decisions taken,” he indicated, underscoring that any action undertaken during the standoff had full political backing.
He further explained that operational autonomy is critical in high-stakes military situations, where on-ground commanders require flexibility to respond swiftly to evolving threats.
Rules of Engagement Clear
Addressing speculation over whether explicit orders were needed to open fire, the former chief noted that Indian soldiers are always authorised to act in self-defence. He emphasised that troops stationed along sensitive borders have standing instructions to protect their positions and personal safety, ensuring clarity during confrontations.

Memoir Under Review
General Naravane also maintained restraint regarding the contents of his memoir, which is currently under review by the Ministry of Defence. He declined to elaborate on specific excerpts, stating that it would be inappropriate to comment while the official clearance process is ongoing.
He added that he has since moved forward and recently released another book titled The Curious and the Classified.
Reflecting on the Standoff
Looking back at the 2020 crisis, General Naravane credited the decisive actions of field commanders for strengthening India’s position during subsequent negotiations. He highlighted that the episode demonstrated strong coordination and mutual trust between the government and the armed forces.
The 2020 India-China standoff marked one of the most serious military confrontations between the two countries in decades. Naravane’s remarks aim to clarify the nature of civil-military decision-making during that period, reinforcing the narrative of cohesive leadership and strategic alignment at the highest levels.
