New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP and former Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dr Dinesh Sharma has been appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by President Droupadi Murmu. The appointment notification was issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan late on Saturday, marking another significant step in Sharma’s long political journey.
The 62-year-old politician has held several important positions in politics and public life, moving from academia and municipal administration in Lucknow to the Uttar Pradesh government, Parliament and now the constitutional office of Lieutenant Governor.
According to the notification, Sharma’s appointment will take effect from the date he assumes charge. His tenure in the Rajya Sabha was scheduled to end on November 25.
From Professor to Mayor of Lucknow
Before entering the higher echelons of politics, Dr Dinesh Sharma was associated with Lucknow University, where he served as a professor in the Department of Commerce.
His political career gained considerable prominence at the city level when he became Mayor of Lucknow. Sharma served as mayor for two consecutive terms from 2006 until March 2018, giving him an extended tenure in the administration of Uttar Pradesh’s capital.
During the same period, he also served as president of the Uttar Pradesh Mayors’ Council from 2007 to March 2018. His experience in urban administration subsequently became an important part of his political profile.
Rise Within the BJP
Sharma’s career in the BJP organisation extended beyond Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh. He held several organisational responsibilities, including the position of national vice-president of the party.
He was also entrusted with responsibilities outside the state. Sharma served as the BJP’s in-charge for Gujarat and was associated with the party’s organisational exercises in other states. He also served as an observer during the selection of a chief minister in Haryana and the BJP state president in Rajasthan.
Earlier in his political career, Sharma served as president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP’s youth wing.
Deputy Chief Minister in the Yogi Government
Dr Sharma reached the state government’s top leadership in 2017 when the BJP formed the government in Uttar Pradesh under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
He served as Deputy Chief Minister from 2017 to 2022. During his tenure, he handled important portfolios related to secondary and higher education, science and technology, electronics and information technology.
His tenure coincided with a period of considerable policy focus on education, technology and digital infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh.
Sharma did not contest the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election. Following the election, the BJP sent him to the Rajya Sabha, where he continued his political career at the national level.
Rajya Sabha Tenure and Parliamentary Responsibilities
Dr Dinesh Sharma became a Rajya Sabha member in 2023. During his parliamentary tenure, he was also associated with the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language.
He served as a prominent member of the committee and as convener of its first sub-committee. The Parliamentary Committee on Official Language reviews the progress of Hindi usage in official government work.
His parliamentary role added another dimension to a career that had already spanned academia, municipal governance, state administration and party organisation.
A Career Spanning Academia, Politics and Governance
Sharma’s political journey is notable for the range of responsibilities he has undertaken. He began his professional career in academia before moving into municipal politics, subsequently taking on senior responsibilities within the BJP and eventually entering the Uttar Pradesh cabinet.
His career can broadly be traced through four major phases: professor at Lucknow University, two-term Mayor of Lucknow, Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Rajya Sabha member.
His appointment as Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands now takes him into a constitutional administrative role in a strategically important Union Territory.
Why Andaman and Nicobar Matters
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands occupy a strategically significant position in the Indian Ocean, close to important maritime routes and India’s eastern maritime approaches.
The Union Territory has also emerged as a major focus of infrastructure and connectivity initiatives. Among the government’s ambitious plans is the proposed Great Nicobar Island development project, which envisages large-scale investment in infrastructure, transport, tourism and related facilities.
The islands’ geographical location gives them importance from both economic and strategic perspectives. Sharma’s appointment therefore comes at a time when the administration of the Union Territory is likely to remain closely associated with questions of infrastructure development, environmental management, connectivity and national security.
From Lucknow’s Civic Politics to a Constitutional Office
Dr Dinesh Sharma’s elevation to the office of Lieutenant Governor represents a significant transition from electoral and organisational politics to constitutional administration.
His career has taken him from the classroom of Lucknow University to the mayoral office of Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet and the Rajya Sabha. His new assignment in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands places him in charge of a Union Territory with considerable strategic, environmental and developmental importance.
