Tata Completes Internal Trials of Indigenous 155mm Mounted Gun System

Mumbai: Tata Advanced Systems has completed internal trials of its indigenous 155mm Mounted Gun System (MGS), marking a significant step in India’s efforts to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing and artillery capabilities.

The truck-mounted system combines a 155mm/52-calibre artillery gun with a high-mobility 6×6 military vehicle, eliminating the need for a separate towing platform. The design is based on technologies developed under the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) programme, in which DRDO and Indian industry have played key roles.

A major feature of the MGS is its automated ammunition-handling system, designed to reduce crew workload and support a faster firing cycle. An integrated digital gun control and positioning system is also intended to improve target acquisition and firing accuracy.

The system is designed to accommodate NATO-standard ammunition and comply with Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding requirements. It can employ extended-range ammunition capable of engaging targets at distances of up to 45 kilometres.

Its wheeled configuration provides strong tactical mobility, enabling rapid deployment, firing and relocation—commonly described as “shoot-and-scoot” capability. The platform is also suited to strategic movement by road, air and sea.

The successful internal trials represent an important development in India’s move towards mobile, automated and digitally enabled artillery systems. The MGS will now have to undergo further evaluations before any potential induction into the Indian Army.
