Washington: US President Donald Trump has said that Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit the White House in September, signalling a potential new phase of high-level diplomatic engagement between the world’s two largest economies amid ongoing differences over trade, technology and global security.
Trump made the announcement while hosting the 2025 World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers at the White House. During a tour of the renovated White House grounds and the Oval Office, he told players that Xi was expected to visit in September, though he did not disclose details of the proposed meeting or its agenda.
Speaking to the team, Trump described the Oval Office as one of the world’s most influential decision-making centres and remarked that it often provides a favourable setting for important negotiations. His comments came in an informal setting, and the White House has not yet released an official schedule or statement confirming the visit.
Earlier the same day, while addressing an event focused on his administration’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge, Trump again referred to Xi’s expected visit, indicating that it was anticipated around September 24. He also said the subject had been discussed during his previous visit to Beijing.
During his remarks, Trump highlighted the strategic competition between the United States and China in artificial intelligence. He argued that the US remains ahead in AI development but stressed that maintaining its lead would require continued investment in electricity generation, advanced data centres and digital infrastructure capable of supporting next-generation computing technologies.
The diplomatic comments came as the White House honoured the Los Angeles Dodgers for winning consecutive World Series titles. Trump congratulated the franchise on its achievement, praising the players, coaches and staff for their consistency and success.
He also paid tribute to Japanese baseball star Shohei Ohtani, describing him as one of the sport’s most remarkable talents. Trump compared Ohtani’s rare ability to excel both as a pitcher and a hitter with baseball legend Babe Ruth, calling him a globally admired athlete.
Dodgers owner Mark Walter thanked the President for hosting the team and reflected on the club’s championship-winning season, while manager Dave Roberts said the organisation was now focused on pursuing a third consecutive World Series title.
The ceremony concluded with Trump presenting commemorative White House challenge coins to members of the Dodgers before inviting the players to tour the Oval Office.
