Mumbai: India opener Prabhsimran Singh says he is eager to earn his maiden international cap during the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe, describing the opportunity to represent the national team as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
Speaking to JioStar, the Punjab Kings batter said playing for India has always been his ultimate ambition. Having previously been part of the squad for the Asian Games without making an appearance, Prabhsimran expressed hope that this time he would make his international debut and establish himself in the national setup.
The 25-year-old acknowledged the intense competition for places at the top of India’s batting order but described it as healthy and motivating. He said his focus remains on making the most of any opportunity that comes his way rather than worrying about the depth of talent available.
Prabhsimran also had high praise for young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, with whom he recently opened the innings during the India A series against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. He said batting alongside the youngster was an enjoyable experience, adding that Sooryavanshi’s fearless stroke play brings excitement and positivity to the game. The two openers spent valuable time discussing batting and learning from each other during the tour.
Reflecting on his development over the past two seasons, Prabhsimran credited former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting for playing a crucial role in shaping his approach. He said both mentors have encouraged him to trust his natural game while maintaining disciplined preparation and consistent processes, even when results do not immediately follow.
Prabhsimran noted that their guidance has helped him evolve from an aggressive opener who often made quick starts into a more complete batter capable of converting promising innings into match-winning performances. After registering consecutive 500-plus run seasons in the Indian Premier League, he said his emphasis is now on making bigger contributions and batting deeper into the innings.
Looking ahead, Prabhsimran said consistency remains his biggest objective, whether in domestic cricket, the IPL or on the international stage. He added that once he earns a place in the Indian team, his aim will be to perform regularly enough to cement his position for the long term.
The opener’s recent performances in domestic cricket, India A matches and the IPL have strengthened his case for national selection, and he now hopes to translate that form into success whenever he gets the opportunity to wear the India jersey.
