Johannesburg: The fixtures for the fifth edition of South Africa’s SA20 league have been unveiled, with defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape set to begin their title defence against Pretoria Capitals in a repeat of last season’s final on January 17, 2027, at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.
The month-long tournament will conclude with the final at Newlands in Cape Town on February 21, 2027, as all six host venues prepare to welcome some of the world’s leading T20 cricketers.
The opening clash is expected to renew one of the league’s emerging rivalries after Pretoria Capitals, under new head coach Sourav Ganguly and captain Keshav Maharaj, reached the Season 4 final following back-to-back first-round exits in the previous two editions. Sunrisers Eastern Cape, despite changes in leadership and personnel, continued their consistent run under head coach Adrian Birrell to successfully defend their title.
The schedule also features four Saturday double-headers on January 23, January 30, February 6 and February 13, offering fans back-to-back matches across multiple venues. The first double-header will see Durban’s Super Giants host Pretoria Capitals at Kingsmead before Joburg Super Kings face Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the Wanderers later the same day.
SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith described the release of the fixtures as a significant milestone in the build-up to the new season. He said beginning the tournament with a rematch of one of the competition’s most memorable finals was a fitting way to launch Season 5 and reflected the league’s continued growth.
The playoff schedule introduces a new venue, with Boland Park in Paarl hosting Qualifier 1 for the first time on February 16. The Wanderers in Johannesburg will stage the Eliminator on February 17 and Qualifier 2 on February 19, before the tournament culminates with the final at Newlands.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis welcomed the return of the SA20 final to Newlands, saying the event would further strengthen the city’s reputation as a major cricket destination, particularly in a year when it is also preparing to host matches during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
The league’s organisers expressed confidence that supporters across all six host cities would once again create a vibrant atmosphere throughout the tournament, with packed fixtures, playoff drama and world-class cricket expected to make SA20 Season 5 another landmark edition.
