SRMS Riddhima Hosts Staging of Anton Chekhov-Inspired Play The Proposals

Bareilly: An engaging theatrical performance of The Proposals was staged at SRMS Riddhima on Sunday evening, captivating audiences with its blend of humour, satire and insightful observations on human relationships. The play was presented by the Aligarh-based Rangsaaz Art and Cultural Society and directed by noted theatre artist Jai Singh.

Based on two of renowned Russian playwright Anton Chekhov’s celebrated comic plays, The Proposal and The Bear, the production explored themes of human ego, emotional complexities and the unpredictable nature of love through witty dialogue and humorous situations.

The play revolved around characters whose stubbornness, personal biases and strong personalities constantly lead them into conflicts. In one storyline, a marriage proposal spirals into arguments and disputes, while in another, a financial disagreement unexpectedly develops into an emotional connection. These seemingly trivial confrontations created amusing situations that entertained the audience while also encouraging reflection on relationships and human behaviour.

Combining Chekhov’s signature satirical style with contemporary sensibilities, the production raised thought-provoking questions about whether relationships are built solely on compatibility or on emotions that often emerge in the most unexpected circumstances. Filled with humour, sharp exchanges and emotional depth, the play highlighted how some of the strongest bonds can arise from the fiercest disagreements.

Director Jai Singh also played the lead role of Michael D’Souza in The Proposal. Other cast members included Anuj Shrikrishna as Stephen, Vandana as Natalya 1, Aarzu Siddiqui as Natalya 2, Nakul as caretaker Luka, and Smirnov in the role of the army officer.

The event was attended by Dev Murti, Founder and Chairman of the SRMS Trust, along with Asha Murti, Aditya Murti, Richa Murti, Devisha, Subhash Mehra, Dr. Prabhakar Gupta, Dr. Anuj Kumar, Dr. Shailesh Saxena, Dr. Rita Sharma, and several prominent citizens of Bareilly.

The performance received an enthusiastic response from theatre lovers and cultural enthusiasts, reaffirming the enduring appeal of Chekhov’s timeless exploration of human nature and relationships.
