Lucknow: Experts, academicians, researchers, and farmers gathered at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) on Wednesday for a seminar on the theme “Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture,” where speakers expressed serious concern over the growing challenges posed by changing climatic conditions to agriculture, food security, and farmers’ livelihoods.
The seminar was jointly organized by the Department of Horticulture, BBAU, and Yuva Rashtra, Awadh Province. The event served as a platform for discussions on the far-reaching implications of climate change and the strategies needed to build a more resilient agricultural sector.
The programme was chaired by BBAU Vice-Chancellor Raj Kumar Mittal, while RSS Awadh Province Co-Provincial Pracharak Sanjay attended as the chief guest. Other dignitaries present included Dean of Academic Affairs Prof. S. Victor Babu, Dean of the School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Prof. Deepa H. Dwivedi, Head of the Department of Horticulture Prof. M.L. Meena, and programme coordinator Dr. Ravishankar Verma.
The event commenced with floral tributes to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, followed by the university anthem and the ceremonial welcome of guests and faculty members.
Climate Change Affecting Farmers and Food Systems
Addressing the gathering, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar Mittal highlighted the significant impact of climate change on agricultural productivity, food security, and the livelihoods of millions dependent on farming.
He stressed the need to restore a balanced relationship between human activities and nature, describing environmental conservation as one of the most pressing responsibilities of the present generation. He advocated the sustainable use of natural resources such as water, land, forests, and biodiversity, emphasizing that tree plantation, resource conservation, and environmentally responsible lifestyles are essential for securing a sustainable future for coming generations.

Irregular Rainfall and Rising Temperatures a Major Concern
Chief guest Sanjay spoke extensively about the challenges emerging from changing weather patterns. He noted that irregular rainfall, shifting climatic cycles, and rising temperatures are increasingly affecting crop productivity and threatening food security across regions.
He urged stakeholders in the agricultural sector to remain vigilant and adopt long-term strategies to address climate-related risks. According to him, strengthening resilience in agriculture will be crucial to ensuring stable food production in the years ahead.

During the seminar, Prof. S. Victor Babu, Prof. Deepa H. Dwivedi, Prof. M.L. Meena, and Dr. Ravishankar Verma shared their insights on various dimensions of climate change and its impact on agriculture. The speakers discussed sustainable farming practices, conservation of natural resources, emerging environmental challenges, and measures needed to safeguard food security.
