Lucknow Airport Reinforces Green Commitment on World Environment Day 2026

Lucknow: Marking World Environment Day 2026, Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (CCSIA), Lucknow, organized a series of awareness and sustainability initiatives aimed at promoting environmental conservation and fostering a greener future.

As part of the celebrations, a plantation drive was conducted across the airport premises, with officials and employees actively participating in efforts to expand green cover and reduce carbon emissions. A street play was also organized for passengers and staff members to spread awareness about environmental protection and sustainable living.

The airport continues to play a significant role in advancing sustainability through a range of eco-friendly initiatives. Currently, the airport maintains 4,452 trees and plants across its premises and has developed and preserved approximately 13.2 hectares of landscaped green areas, contributing to biodiversity and environmental balance.

To promote renewable energy use, the airport has deployed solar-powered irrigation pumps for horticultural activities. In another major sustainability initiative, 100 percent of horticultural waste is recycled and converted into biogas for energy generation. The residual by-product from the process is utilized as organic manure in landscaping and gardening activities.

The airport has also adopted several energy-efficient measures. The terminal building features wide glass façades that maximize the use of natural daylight, reducing dependence on artificial lighting. Conventional lighting systems have been replaced with energy-efficient LED fixtures, while sensor-based lighting systems installed in terminals and office spaces help minimize energy consumption.

In the area of water conservation, CCSIA operates a 1,950 KLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), enabling effective wastewater treatment and recycling. The treated water is reused for various non-potable applications, significantly reducing freshwater consumption.

Airport authorities said these initiatives reflect Lucknow Airport’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible infrastructure management. Beyond operational efficiency, the measures are designed to contribute to climate resilience, resource conservation and long-term sustainability.

On the occasion, airport management appealed to passengers, employees and stakeholders to recognize their role in protecting the environment and to actively support efforts toward building a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future.

Through its integrated sustainability initiatives, Lucknow Airport continues to set an example of environmentally responsible airport operations while contributing to India’s broader vision of sustainable development and green growth.
