SGPGIMS Organises Cyclothon to Promote Fuel Conservation and Sustainable Mobility Amid Global Energy Crisis

Lucknow: Amid growing concerns over the global energy crisis and rising fuel consumption, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences took a significant step towards promoting sustainable transportation and environmental responsibility by organising a symbolic cyclothon within its campus on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

The initiative was aimed at encouraging the reduction of motorised vehicle usage for short-distance commuting inside the institute campus and promoting cycling as an eco-friendly and healthy alternative. The cyclothon began at 9 am from the Director’s Office located in the Administrative Block and followed a designated route covering the Old OPD, Gate No. 2, EMRTC, Advanced Diabetic Centre and PMSSY before concluding back at the Administrative Block.

The event witnessed active participation from senior officials, faculty members, healthcare professionals, technical staff and employees of the institute. Director Padma Shri Prof. R.K. Dhiman led the initiative and emphasised the importance of adopting sustainable practices in everyday life to support national fuel conservation efforts.

Among the prominent participants were Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Devendra Gupta, Dean Dr. Shaleen Kumar, Head of the Department of Nephrology Dr. Narayan Prasad, Head of Anaesthesiology Dr. Sanjay Dheeraj, Head of Endocrine Surgery Dr. Gaurav Agrawal, Finance Officer Shashi Bhushan Singh Tomar and Joint Director Administration Prakash Singh, along with several faculty members and staff.

Institute authorities stated that the initiative aligns with the appeal made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath urging citizens to use petroleum products carefully and responsibly in view of the ongoing global energy challenges linked to the West Asia conflict.

Officials noted that reducing dependence on fuel-powered vehicles, especially for short distances, can play a meaningful role in conserving petroleum products and lowering environmental pollution. The institute also encouraged people to prioritise public transport and adopt healthier commuting practices such as cycling and walking whenever possible.

The cyclothon also highlighted the health benefits associated with cycling and physical activity. Participants observed that such initiatives contribute towards creating a cleaner, greener and healthier campus environment while also improving the well-being of students, faculty and staff members.

The programme concluded with a collective pledge by participants to support energy conservation measures and promote environmentally responsible habits both within and outside the campus.
