New Delhi: Mahindra & Mahindra has unveiled a rugged, defence-spec all-terrain vehicle (ATV) based on the Mahindra Thar Roxx, igniting discussions among automotive enthusiasts about the potential for a road-legal civilian version.
The stripped-down ATV, shared by Anand Mahindra on social media, is designed with a clear focus on functionality over aesthetics. Built for military applications, the vehicle showcases a raw, purpose-driven design that many believe could translate well into a lifestyle off-road SUV for civilian use.
At its core, the ATV retains the Thar Roxx’s proven 2.2-litre diesel engine, delivering 172 bhp and 400 Nm of torque, coupled with a 4×4 drivetrain. However, the similarities largely end there. The defence variant features a roll cage in place of a conventional roof, tubular half-doors, exposed body panels, heavy-duty bumpers, and underbody protection. Additional elements such as a front-mounted winch, jerrycan mounts, blackout lighting, and a rear spare wheel setup reinforce its utilitarian character.
The design philosophy prioritises durability and operational efficiency, offering a stark contrast to the increasingly cosmetic “adventure styling” seen in many modern SUVs. Its mechanical, no-frills layout has struck a chord with off-road enthusiasts seeking authenticity and capability.
Industry observers note that the concept could be adapted relatively easily into a road-legal version. Such a model could be positioned above the standard Thar Roxx as a more hardcore, factory-built off-road derivative, potentially rivaling global icons like the Jeep Wrangler while catering specifically to Indian terrain and consumer preferences.

A civilian iteration could retain the ATV’s rugged appeal while incorporating practical features such as removable soft doors, a modular roof, all-terrain tyres, snorkel systems, recovery points, and washable cabin materials. Overlanding-focused accessories and utility mounts could further enhance its appeal among adventure seekers.
The move could also align with Mahindra’s strategy of tapping niche yet passionate market segments. The success of the Thar brand has already demonstrated strong demand for purpose-built off-road vehicles in India.
While such a specialised offering may not deliver high sales volumes, analysts suggest it could serve as a halo product—enhancing brand image and reinforcing Mahindra’s reputation for building capable, adventure-ready vehicles.
For now, the defence-spec ATV remains a concept tailored for military use. However, its enthusiastic reception signals a clear opportunity for Mahindra to bring a road-legal version to market—potentially creating one of the most exciting iterations of the Thar Roxx lineup yet.
