BRICS vs NATO: Russia Hits Back at U.S., Claims ‘Global Majority’ Strength

Moscow: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has launched a sharp critique of the United States and the Western military alliance NATO, asserting that emerging global platforms like BRICS represent a more democratic and consensus-driven world order.

In an interview with a Russian YouTube channel, Lavrov argued that organizations such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) function largely through consensus, unlike NATO, which he claimed operates under U.S. dominance.

“You cannot make decisions here as easily as in NATO, where the Americans say ‘keep quiet,’ and everyone understands how it works,” Lavrov remarked, suggesting that Western institutions lack genuine multilateralism.

Lavrov also criticized the European Union, accusing bureaucrats in Brussels of dictating policies to elected governments. He referred to comments by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who in December 2025 alleged that the EU was undermining the rule of law and prolonging the Ukraine conflict through centralized decision-making.

The Russian minister further accused the U.S. of using “unfair methods,” including sanctions on Russian oil firms, to suppress competition and curb Moscow’s trade, investment, and military-technical cooperation with strategic partners such as India and other BRICS members.

The remarks underscore growing geopolitical friction between Western alliances and emerging blocs, as Moscow seeks to position BRICS and allied groupings as representatives of what it calls the “global majority.”
