Lucknow: Getting a new electricity connection in Uttar Pradesh used to mean endless trips to the power department, long waits, and a process most people dreaded. That’s changed. Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s push for transparent, technology-driven governance, the state’s Energy Department has turned the process on its head with its “Jhatpat Portal” — and it’s become a genuine convenience for lakhs of residents across the state.
The Chief Minister has long pushed for government services to reach citizens’ doorsteps in a simple, transparent way, and the energy sector took that to heart by moving the entire connection process online and putting it on a fixed timeline. People can now apply from home and get their new connection within a set window — no more running around offices.
The numbers tell the story. In FY 2025-26, the portal issued a record 13,98,344 new electricity connections. In FY 2026-27, it had already issued 2,68,885 new connections by June 2026 alone — another record pace. That kind of speed has visibly boosted public trust in the state’s power services, while saving people time, effort, and money.
The Chief Minister views the energy sector as foundational to the state’s development, and his government has worked on both ends of the pipeline — ramping up power generation while modernizing transmission and distribution. New substations, strengthened power lines, upgraded transformer capacity, and smart-grid technology have all made the system more robust than before.
What really sets Jhatpat Portal apart is that the whole journey — application, approval, and final connection — happens online, with applicants able to track their status in real time. That transparency has cut down on unnecessary paperwork and office visits, and it’s why the portal has caught on just as much in rural areas as in cities.
The state isn’t just chasing connection numbers, either — the goal is reliable, quality power supply too. UP’s transmission network has grown stronger, and on June 24, 2026, the state met a record peak demand of 32,673 MW, cementing its place among India’s top power-supplying states. Even as new consumers join the grid, the strengthened distribution network is keeping supply steady.

The portal has been especially welcome news for the poor, the middle class, small traders, farmers, and families building new homes — groups for whom getting a connection used to take weeks or even months. Now the process is fast and predictable, which has only deepened public confidence in the system.
The Energy Department credits this shift to the Chief Minister’s repeated directives that every citizen receive quality, time-bound services, and officials point to Jhatpat Portal as the clearest example of that mandate in action. As industry, trade, education, healthcare, and urbanization continue to expand across the state, demand for electricity keeps climbing — and the government says it’s responded with sustained investment in generation capacity, new power projects, and a stronger distribution network.
Beyond the statistics, officials describe the portal as a working model of digital governance done right — one that’s improved not just how quickly people get connected, but how transparent, accountable, and efficient government services feel overall. Millions of consumers are now dealing directly with the system online, without any middlemen in the way.
For the state government, the initiative checks two boxes at once: “Ease of Living” and “Ease of Doing Business.” And for the Energy Department, Jhatpat Portal has become something bigger than an online service — it’s held up as a symbol of the Chief Minister’s broader vision, one built around technology, transparency, and public service, that’s reshaping how millions of UP residents experience something as basic as getting the lights turned on.
