Thimphu: The Border Roads Organisation’s Project DANTAK celebrated its 66th Raising Day on April 24, 2026, in Thimphu, marking over six decades of transformative infrastructure development within the Kingdom of Bhutan. Established in April 1961, the project has evolved from a pioneering road-building unit into a vital symbol of the enduring friendship and bilateral cooperation between India and Bhutan. The anniversary was commemorated through a series of professional and community-focused events, including a solemn tribute to personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty and an inter-school quiz competition that engaged the local youth in Thimphu.
A Legacy of Connectivity and Socio-Economic Transformation
Project DANTAK has been a primary architect of Bhutan’s modern connectivity, responsible for constructing the nation’s first motorable roads and establishing essential national infrastructure. To date, the project has completed over 1,500 kilometers of roads, including the strategically critical East–West Highway that links Trashigang to the capital, Thimphu. Beyond road networks, the project’s footprint extends to landmark aviation and institutional facilities, such as the construction of Paro International Airport, Yongphula Airport, the Phuentsholing–Thimphu Highway, and numerous telecommunications networks, hospitals, and schools that have underpinned the country’s socio-economic growth.
Modernization and Strategic Infrastructure Upgrades
In alignment with Bhutan’s evolving developmental needs, Project DANTAK has recently shifted its focus toward large-scale modernization and capacity enhancement. This includes the successful double-laning of the Confluence–Haa road stretch, the first phase of which was inaugurated on August 1, 2025. Additionally, the nearly 168-kilometer Samdrup Jongkhar–Trashigang highway has undergone significant upgrades to improve safety and drastically reduce travel times. The project’s engineering resilience is frequently put to the test during natural calamities, where DANTAK teams are known for restoring vital lifelines in record time following landslides and road washouts.

Future Outlook and Regional Integration
Moving forward, Project DANTAK continues to execute a series of high-priority projects in the South-Eastern region of Bhutan, including the construction of the Nganglam–Dewathang, Samrang–Jomotsangkha, and Khotakpa–Tshobaley road networks. Ongoing works also involve the strengthening of the Damchu–Chhukha highway axis and the development of alternate alignments in the Panbang–Nganglam and Dewathang–Samdrupcholing areas. These initiatives remain meticulously aligned with Bhutan’s environmental sensitivities and national priorities, reinforcing the spirit of partnership reaffirmed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Kingdom on November 11, 2025.
