Singrauli: India’s Miniratna public sector enterprise, Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), is playing a pivotal role in promoting inclusive and sustainable development across Singrauli, Sonbhadra, and surrounding areas through its extensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Over the past 12 years, the company has significantly expanded its social welfare efforts, increasing its annual CSR expenditure from ₹39 crore in 2013-14 to ₹146 crore in 2025-26. During this period, NCL has invested approximately ₹1,370 crore in sustainable development projects, positively impacting nearly one million people across the coalfield region.
Working under the guidance of the Ministry of Coal, Government of India, NCL’s CSR programmes have focused on key sectors including education, healthcare, disability rehabilitation, environmental conservation, skill development, clean drinking water, infrastructure creation, and rural livelihoods.
Mining Technology Institute to Boost Technical Education
One of NCL’s flagship educational initiatives is its financial support for the establishment of an Institute of Mining Technology in Singrauli at an estimated cost of ₹76 crore. The institute will provide quality mining engineering education aligned with industry requirements and will be operated by the Directorate of Technical Education, Bhopal.
Rehabilitation Support for Persons with Disabilities
NCL’s District Disability Rehabilitation Centre has emerged as an important support system for persons with disabilities in Singrauli (Madhya Pradesh), Sonbhadra (Uttar Pradesh), and Surajpur (Chhattisgarh). Through speech therapy, physiotherapy, counselling, assistive devices, and rehabilitation services, the centre benefits around 2,000 individuals annually and promotes greater social inclusion and self-reliance.
‘Charak’ Initiative Offers Lifeline to Critically Ill Patients
Under its CSR programme “Charak – Community Health: A Responsive Action for Koylanchal,” NCL provides financial assistance for the treatment of economically weaker patients suffering from life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, tuberculosis, HIV, heart disease, and kidney-related ailments. With a project outlay of ₹8.5 crore, the initiative has already extended support to several patients requiring advanced medical treatment.
Environmental Conservation Through Green CSR
NCL has invested ₹9.53 crore in environmental sustainability projects, including the cleaning of catchment areas of the Gopad and Mayar rivers, construction of check dams, and development of percolation dams. These measures have contributed to water conservation, groundwater recharge, and soil erosion control across the region.

Skill Development Enhancing Employability
Through its “Kaushal” initiative, NCL has spent ₹3.86 crore on strengthening Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in Waidhan and Dudhi. More than 1,350 youth, women, and project-affected families have received employment-oriented technical training in various trades, improving their livelihood prospects.
Quality Education for Tribal Children
At Seva Kunj Ashram in Chapki, Sonbhadra, NCL’s developmental interventions are benefiting nearly 300 tribal and underprivileged students. The project includes the creation of modern facilities such as an auditorium, indoor sports infrastructure, and archery training facilities to promote holistic development.
‘Nanha Sa Dil-NCL’ Giving New Life to Children
NCL’s “Nanha Sa Dil” project, aimed at treating children with congenital heart diseases, has screened more than 38,000 children across Singrauli, Sonbhadra, and nearby areas. Under the programme, 240 children have undergone free life-saving heart surgeries, offering hope and improved health outcomes to affected families.
Women Empowerment Through Poultry Farming
The company’s Small Holders Poultry Project has emerged as a successful livelihood initiative for tribal families, particularly women. So far, 1,050 tribal households have benefited directly from the programme, while another 1,500 families are expected to gain from its expanding backward-linkage network in the near future.
Electrification Transforming Rural Lives
As part of its rural infrastructure efforts, NCL has facilitated the electrification of 10,253 households in the Chitrangi block. The initiative has improved the quality of life for nearly 40,000 residents by providing reliable access to electricity and enabling better educational, economic, and social opportunities.
Through these wide-ranging CSR initiatives, NCL continues to reinforce its commitment to sustainable development and community welfare, contributing significantly to the socio-economic transformation of the Singrauli-Sonbhadra region while complementing national development goals.
