Workshop on Kalighat Patachitra attracts arts enthusiasts

Lucknow: A two-day workshop on the renowned Bengal folk painting tradition, Kalighat Patachitra, commenced  at Kokoro Art Gallery, offering participants a unique opportunity to learn and experience one of India’s most celebrated folk art forms.

The workshop is being conducted under the guidance of senior folk artist Manoranjan Chitrakar from West Bengal, who is introducing participants to the history, techniques, and cultural significance of Kalighat Patachitra.

Around 25 participants from Lucknow, Ayodhya, and nearby areas have enrolled in the programme. During the inaugural session, attendees were introduced to the historical evolution of Kalighat paintings, their distinctive visual style, line work, use of natural colours, composition techniques, and thematic elements. Manoranjan Chitrakar also provided a live demonstration of the traditional painting process, helping participants understand the intricate details of this centuries-old art form.

On the first day of the workshop, participants focused on sketching and learning the fundamentals of colour application. Through hands-on sessions, they gained practical exposure to the techniques that define the iconic Bengal folk painting style.

Speaking about the initiative, Bhupendra Kumar Asthana said the workshop aims to introduce younger generations and art enthusiasts to Bengal’s rich folk painting heritage while encouraging a deeper appreciation of India’s diverse artistic traditions. He noted that participants will spend the two-day programme practicing various Kalighat Patachitra techniques and creating their own artworks under expert guidance.

The workshop has drawn enthusiastic responses from art lovers and aspiring artists, many of whom described such programmes as essential for preserving and promoting India’s traditional art forms in an increasingly digital age.

Organizers believe that initiatives like this not only help safeguard cultural heritage but also create meaningful platforms for interaction between traditional artists and contemporary learners, ensuring that folk art traditions continue to thrive among future generations.
