Cleanliness Campaign, Tree Plantation Drive, and New River-Cleaning Boats Flagged Off at Kudia Ghat
Lucknow: Marking the birthday of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and World Environment Day, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation launched a comprehensive Gomti Conservation and Cleanliness Campaign along with a tree plantation drive at Kudia Ghat on Thursday. The event was inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister and Lucknow In-charge Minister Suresh Khanna, while Mayor Sushma Kharkwal presided over the programme.
The event witnessed the presence of several prominent public representatives, including Rajya Sabha MP Brij Lal, MLC Ram Chandra Pradhan, Deputy Leader of the Councillor Group Sushil Tiwari ‘Pammi’, and councillors Gauri Sanwaria, Sandeep Sharma, Anurag Mishra ‘Annu’, Rajeev Bajpai, Deepu Jaiswal, Anoop Kamal Saxena, and Purushottam Puri, among others.
Minister Administers Cleanliness Pledge
Addressing the gathering, Minister Suresh Khanna administered a cleanliness pledge and emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean environment and preserving rivers for future generations. He urged citizens to actively participate in cleanliness initiatives and contribute towards environmental sustainability.
Mayor Highlights Need for Public Participation
Mayor Sushma Kharkwal described the Gomti River as the identity of Lucknow and stressed that its conservation requires active public participation. She appealed to residents to incorporate cleanliness and environmental protection into their daily lives.
“One Tree in Mother’s Name” Campaign Promoted
During the programme, Minister Khanna, Mayor Kharkwal, Rajya Sabha MP Brij Lal, and MLC Ram Chandra Pradhan planted saplings and tied protective threads around them, symbolizing their commitment to safeguarding the environment. The dignitaries encouraged citizens to participate in the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (One Tree in Mother’s Name) campaign by planting and nurturing at least one tree.
Sanitation Workers Honoured
The Municipal Corporation also felicitated sanitation workers for their invaluable contribution to maintaining cleanliness across the city. Public representatives praised their dedication and acknowledged their vital role in building a cleaner and healthier Lucknow.

New Boats Deployed for Gomti Clean-Up
To strengthen river-cleaning efforts, 12 boats deployed for waste collection and a newly acquired trash steamer were flagged off by Minister Khanna and Mayor Kharkwal. The vessels will be used to regularly remove floating waste from the Gomti River and improve its ecological health.
Special Campaign Till June 25
Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar announced that the Gomti Conservation and Cleanliness Campaign will continue from June 5 to June 25. The initiative will include river-cleaning operations, awareness programmes, plantation drives, and a series of activities focused on environmental conservation.
NGOs Join Hands for River Conservation
Several voluntary organisations, including the Gomti Task Force, Chintan Foundation, and Hope Foundation, actively participated in the programme, reinforcing community involvement in environmental protection efforts.
Senior municipal officials, including Additional Municipal Commissioners Pankaj Srivastava and Arun Gupta, Chief Engineer (Civil) Mahesh Verma, Chief Engineer (RR) Manoj Prabhat, along with representatives of various institutions and citizens, were also present at the event.
The campaign reflects Lucknow’s commitment to environmental stewardship, river conservation, and sustainable urban development through collective public participation.
