Lucknow: The Legal Aid Centre of the Faculty of Law at University of Lucknow, in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority, organised a legal aid and literacy camp at District Jail Mohanlalganj on April 27, 2026.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dean, Faculty of Law, Prof. (Dr.) R. K. Verma, Legal Aid Centre Chairman Prof. (Dr.) Abhishek Kumar Tiwari, Co-Chairman Dr. Anurodh Upadhyay, along with Jail authorities including Jailor Ajay Kulwant, Superintendent Ritwik Priyadarshi, and Deputy Superintendent Santosh Dwivedi.
The camp was held in two phases. In the first phase, law students visited Circle No. 5 of the jail, where inmates detained for short durations—typically around ten days—are housed. Students observed the living conditions of inmates and reviewed the facilities available within the premises.
In the second phase, a legal literacy and assistance camp was conducted for inmates. Members of the Legal Aid Centre interacted with prisoners, gathered information regarding the availability of basic amenities, and assessed awareness about free legal aid services provided by the government. The collected data was documented through survey forms and will be submitted to the Legal Services Authority for further action.

During the visit, students also inspected the jail’s library and dining facilities to evaluate overall व्यवस्थाएँ. Deputy Superintendent Santosh Dwivedi informed that the jail premises spans approximately 150 acres, with an authorised capacity of 4,400 inmates. At present, it houses around 2,200 undertrial prisoners and 800 convicted inmates. He added that inmates engaged in work are paid daily wages ranging from ₹50 to ₹85 based on their skill levels.
The programme concluded with a visit to Circle No. 3, where students reviewed food arrangements and other facilities. The participants also had an interaction with the Chief Judicial Magistrate, who provided valuable guidance and appreciated the initiative.
The camp was successfully conducted, reinforcing the university’s commitment to legal awareness and social responsibility.
