NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has reiterated India’s strong stance against terrorism, asserting that the country will always support a “zero tolerance” approach. Speaking virtually at the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Jaishankar emphasized India’s unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and resisting any attempts to normalize it.

Addressing global geopolitical challenges, Jaishankar pointed out the increasing instability and fragmentation in world affairs. He stressed the urgent need for a multilateral system that aligns with contemporary global realities, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in tackling modern issues.

“The shortcomings of the current multilateral frameworks have become evident in recent years. They failed to deliver when the world needed them the most,” Jaishankar remarked, advocating for reform and restructuring in international institutions to better address present-day challenges.

Furthermore, the minister reaffirmed India’s proactive role in defending and advancing human rights globally. Highlighting India’s international development partnerships, he underscored the country’s commitment to sustainability, transparency, and fiscal responsibility. “Our approach has always focused on building capacity, enhancing human resources, and strengthening infrastructure in line with the priorities of our partners,” he stated.

Jaishankar reiterated that India remains steadfast in its fight against terrorism, maintaining a zero-tolerance policy while actively condemning any efforts to justify or legitimize it.

“We live by the philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – the world is one family. This perspective is more crucial now than ever, as the world grapples with rising uncertainties and conflicts while recovering from past crises,” he added.

India’s call for a robust and responsive multilateral system, alongside its firm position on counterterrorism, reflects its broader vision of global peace and security. Jaishankar’s statements at the UNHRC reinforce India’s role as a key advocate for a rules-based international order and a steadfast opponent of terrorism in all its forms.
