Lucknow: In an engaging discussion, Ila Arun, joined by Anjula Bedi, shared insights into her autobiography Pardey Ke Peechey with Nishi Pandey. The book’s title was inspired by her journey of breaking away from the enduring association with her controversial song Choli Ke Peeche. Ila explained how she transformed the narrative, turning the phrase into Pardey Ke Peeche to reflect her life’s journey beyond stereotypes.
Anjula Bedi read the book’s opening page, recounting Ila’s initial struggles in theatre, her interactions with directors, and the challenges she faced to establish herself in the field. Ila described theatre as a powerful medium of mass communication that shaped her identity.
The book also delves into Ila’s roots, highlighting how her parents’ move from Uttar Pradesh to Rajasthan influenced her life. While shooting Thugs of Hindostan, a perfume scent called “Monsoon” evoked memories of her UP origins, inspiring her to start the book from there.
One touching chapter features a “blue diary” Ila found after her mother’s passing. The diary revealed her birthdate, rekindling nostalgic arguments about her mother’s forgetfulness. Ila also shared her deep connection to folk music, influenced by women from varied cultural backgrounds in her family.
