Government to Transform Historic Butler Palace into Book Café and Cultural Hub

Lucknow: In a bid to preserve and promote Uttar Pradesh’s rich heritage, the Yogi Adityanath-led government has initiated the transformation of the historic Butler Palace in Lucknow into a Book Café and cultural centre. This initiative is part of the state government’s broader mission to conserve historical structures and reintegrate them as vibrant hubs of culture and learning.

The proposed Book Café will not only serve as a reading space but will also host exhibitions, workshops, and art galleries, promoting local culture, history, and creativity. The palace, a significant architectural landmark, was originally commissioned in 1915 by Raja of Mahmudabad in memory of Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler, the then Deputy Commissioner of Awadh province.

Under the Chief Minister’s vision, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has begun the makeover process while preserving the original structure of the palace. The renovation will be carried out through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, overseen by a dedicated team formed by the LDA.

Conservation to Be Completed by March 2025

According to the project plan, the conservation and development of Butler Palace into a Book Café will be completed by March 2025. The project involves site clearance, structural repairs, façade restoration, basic wiring, and operational setup, all supervised by the appointed expert team. Efforts will also be made to increase public engagement and raise awareness about heritage preservation among local residents.

The primary function of the Book Café will be to offer reading materials along with snacks and beverages for visitors. Additionally, the venue will host various events, with coaching institutions being roped in to assist in organising and promoting these activities.

Art Gallery, Light and Sound Shows Planned

As part of the cultural enrichment agenda, the Book Café at Butler Palace will feature workshops and classes highlighting local art, culture, and heritage. The space will also host art exhibitions and film screenings, focusing on regional history and artistic talent. A dedicated art gallery showcasing the history of the palace and surrounding areas is also planned.

To further attract visitors and promote local folklore, light and sound shows narrating Lucknow’s history and legends will be conducted. The palace grounds will also serve as a venue for art fairs, craft exhibitions, and showcases of local handmade products, fostering community participation and tourism.

This ambitious project reflects the state government’s commitment to reviving historical landmarks and turning them into dynamic cultural and educational spaces for the public.
