Washington: Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has hinted that the recent cyber attack on social media platform X may have originated from Ukraine. The cyber assault resulted in a major global outage, affecting users across India, Europe, North America, and Asia. On Monday, millions of users were unable to access the micro-blogging platform for an extended period. According to outage tracking platform Downdetector, the disruption peaked around 3 PM.
Musk Accuses Ukraine of Cyber Attack on X
Speaking to the media, Musk alleged that digital traces of the cyber attack led back to Ukraine. In an interview with Fox News, he stated, “We do not know exactly what happened, but it was a large-scale cyber attack originating from IP addresses in Ukraine that attempted to shut down X’s system.”
During the downtime, X completely ceased functioning, and over 40,000 users experienced connectivity issues, making them unable to post or access pages. Confirming the cyber attack on X, Musk declared on Monday that the company is actively working to identify those responsible.
Elon Musk’s Response
The Tesla CEO addressed the incident in a post, saying, “We face attacks every day, but this one was executed with substantial resources. The attack was either coordinated by a large group or a nation-state, and we are investigating.” He further stated, “A major cyber attack on X took place (which is still ongoing).” Musk suggested that the attack was an attempt to silence him and his platform.
Musk’s History of Criticism Towards Ukraine
Musk has been a vocal critic of Ukraine, particularly in his role as an advisor to former U.S. President Donald Trump. Recently, he claimed that Ukraine’s frontline operations would collapse without his Starlink satellite service but assured that access would not be revoked. Reinforcing his stance, he shared a post suggesting that the attack was part of a broader campaign against him.
The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the perpetrators behind the cyber attack and determine whether a state-sponsored entity was involved.
