Change in Jurisdiction of DCPs on the Cards, Proposal for New Police Stations Under Review

Police Commissioner convenes high-level meeting, JCP Crime Bablu Kumar appointed as Nodal Officer

Lucknow — In a bid to improve law enforcement efficiency amid the city’s rapid expansion, the jurisdiction of Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) in Lucknow is likely to undergo a major overhaul. Alongside, a proposal to establish new police stations in expanding suburban and rural areas is also under consideration.

A high-level meeting led by Police Commissioner Amrendra Kumar Sengar was held recently to review the current jurisdictional arrangements and plan for future policing needs. During the meeting, a committee was formed to explore and recommend the restructuring. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Bablu Kumar has been appointed as the nodal officer for this committee, which also includes all five zonal DCPs, Additional DCPs, and Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs).

Current Context and Need for Change

The Commissionerate system was introduced in Lucknow in January 2020, and over the past five years, the city has seen significant urban sprawl, especially in its outskirts. Currently, the city operates with 52 police stations across five zones, but with new residential colonies and expanded localities, there is a growing need for more localized policing.

Reorganization of Zones

Under the proposed plan, the city’s five police zones will be realigned for more efficient administration. One key proposal is to ensure DCPs operate strictly within their geographical zones. Currently, some police stations, such as PGI, Cantt, and Ashiyana, are technically under the Southern Zone but are administratively managed by the Eastern Zone. A similar mismatch exists with Madehganj (located in West but managed by Central) and Manaknagar and Alambagh (located in Central but assigned to Western and Eastern Zones, respectively). These mismatches will be addressed by reassigning these stations to their logical zones.

Areas Under Consideration for New Police Stations

The committee is also deliberating on establishing new police stations in four key areas where population growth and distance from existing stations have raised security concerns. These areas include:

  • Indiranagar’s rural outskirts
  • IIM Bypass Ring Road
  • Samtha in Kakori
  • Rural areas of Chinhat

These localities have seen significant expansion with the development of new residential colonies, prompting the need for better policing infrastructure.

Official Quote

“Since the implementation of the Commissionerate system, the city has expanded significantly. Therefore, we are evaluating the need to create new police stations and reorganize existing zones. A committee has been formed to prepare a detailed report, which will be submitted to the Police Commissioner and the state government soon,” said Bablu Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).

The move is expected to bring more clarity to jurisdictional responsibilities, improve response time, and enhance the overall safety of the city’s growing population. The committee’s report is likely to be finalized and presented in the coming weeks.
