India-Kenya Defence Cooperation Gains Momentum as Kenyan Military Delegation Visits India

New Delhi: India and Kenya are seeking to strengthen defence cooperation through military training exchanges, professional education and maritime security engagement, with a delegation from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) visiting Indian military institutions to study training models for a proposed Joint War College in Kenya.

The delegation, led by Major General R.W. Mwanzia, is visiting India from October 11 to 17 as part of a benchmarking programme. The High Commission of India in Kenya announced the visit, highlighting the opportunity for Kenyan defence personnel to learn from India’s experience in professional military education and training.

During the visit, the delegation is scheduled to tour the College of Defence Management in Secunderabad, the College of Air Warfare in Hyderabad and the Army War College in Mhow. The institutions offer specialised training in defence management, air warfare, military leadership and operational planning.

The programme is expected to help Kenyan officials assess India’s training structures and educational practices as they work towards developing a framework for joint professional education across their armed forces.

Naval Talks Strengthen Bilateral Engagement

The visit follows the first India-Kenya Navy Staff Talks, held in Mombasa from October 5 to 7. The discussions were co-chaired by Commodore Kartik Srimal, Commodore (Foreign Cooperation) of the Indian Navy, and Brigadier Sankale Kiswaa, Deputy Commander of the Kenya Navy.

According to the Indian Navy, the talks covered operational engagement, training exchanges, maritime security and professional interactions. Both sides expressed their commitment to strengthening naval relations and expanding cooperation in the maritime domain.

During the meeting, the Indian delegation also paid a courtesy call on Major General Paul Otieno, Commander of the Kenya Navy, at the service headquarters in Mombasa.

Focus on Indian Ocean Maritime Security

India and Kenya share interests in maintaining security across the Indian Ocean, an important corridor for international shipping and trade. Regular naval dialogue and training exchanges can improve professional understanding, strengthen operational coordination and provide opportunities to address common maritime security challenges.

The ongoing military education programme and recent naval discussions reflect the broadening scope of defence engagement between the two countries.

For Kenya, the Indian institutions’ experience could inform the proposed Joint War College’s development and strengthen professional training across its armed forces. For India, the exchange provides an opportunity to deepen defence ties with an important East African partner.

The final structure and establishment timeline of the proposed Kenyan institution have not been detailed in the announcements provided. Nevertheless, the benchmarking visit marks a step towards greater cooperation in military education, professional exchanges and maritime security.
