Gonda: Six people, including two railway officials and four contract workers, were injured after a rail track suddenly sprang upward during maintenance work on the Gonda–Baruachak railway section on Sunday, triggering panic at the work site.
According to railway officials, the incident occurred while engineers and workers were carrying out track restoration and maintenance operations. Preliminary reports indicate that excessive stress within the rail caused a heavy steel track to snap upward with great force, striking personnel engaged in the repair work.
Among those injured were Senior Section Engineer Pawan Kumar and Awadhesh Dubey, along with four employees of the contracting agency. Co-workers immediately alerted senior railway officials, and all six injured personnel were rushed to the Railway Hospital for treatment.
Dr Deepak Mor, who examined the injured at the Railway Hospital, said Pawan Kumar sustained injuries to his face and leg, while Awadhesh Dubey also suffered injuries. X-ray examinations confirmed that neither of the two officials had sustained fractures. The remaining injured workers were also treated for their injuries and are reported to be receiving medical care.
Following the incident, representatives of the North Eastern Railway Mazdoor Union, including Branch Secretary Yogesh Sharma and union leader Sanjay, visited the Railway Hospital to enquire about the condition of the injured employees and assured them of all possible assistance.
The railway administration has initiated an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that excessive stress in the rail may have caused the track to spring upward during maintenance operations. A detailed inquiry has been ordered, and further action will be taken after the investigation report is submitted.
Railway authorities are expected to examine maintenance procedures and track conditions to determine the exact cause of the accident and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
