Muñoz Fires Colombia into World Cup Round of 32 with Hard-Fought Victory Over Congo

New Delhi: Colombia secured a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after defeating Congo 1-0 in a tightly contested group-stage encounter, thanks to a decisive second-half strike from Daniel Muñoz.

After a goalless first half marked by disciplined defending and strong goalkeeping, Muñoz finally broke the deadlock in the 76th minute. The Colombian defender found a way past Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, whose impressive performance had frustrated Colombia throughout the match, and scored what proved to be the winning goal.

Colombia dominated large portions of the game and created several scoring opportunities, but Mpasi repeatedly came to Congo’s rescue. Efforts from Jhon Arias, James Rodríguez, Luis Díaz, and Gustavo Puerta were either saved or denied by Congo’s resilient defensive setup.

Congo also threatened on occasion. Edo Kayembe came close to opening the scoring with a long-range effort that struck the woodwork, while several attacking moves tested Colombia’s defense. However, neither side was able to find a breakthrough before halftime.

As the match progressed, Colombia’s attackers continued to search for an opening against a well-organized Congo side. Their persistence eventually paid off when Muñoz capitalized on a rare defensive lapse to score the game’s only goal.

Congo mounted late pressure in search of an equalizer, but Colombia held firm to preserve the lead and claim all three points. The victory marked Colombia’s second consecutive win in the tournament, ensuring qualification for the knockout stage with a game to spare.

Despite the defeat, Congo remain in contention for a place in the Round of 32 and could still advance with a positive result against Uzbekistan in their final group match.

Speaking after the game, Colombia coach Néstor Lorenzo praised his players for their determination and discipline.

“Against a team like Congo, you have to be patient and look for the smallest openings. The players showed commitment, character and belief throughout the match,” he said.

Match-winner Daniel Muñoz credited the entire squad for the result.

“We stayed true to our style, played with intensity and remained aggressive in our approach. This victory belongs to the whole team and gives us great confidence going forward,” Muñoz said.
